Explanation of the Verse:
O believers, this verse brings you a shining ray of hope! Allah, the Most High, tells you that it is very possible—indeed, it is His promise—that He will place love and affection between you and those very people from among your relatives and tribes who are now your enemies because of their disbelief and opposition to Islam. This is not a distant dream, for Allah can change hearts in the blink of an eye. He can turn the bitterness of enmity into the sweetness of brotherhood, and the coldness of hatred into the warmth of love.
How does this happen? When Allah wills, He opens the chests of those opponents to the light of Islam. They embrace the faith, and what was once division becomes unity, and what was once hostility becomes sincere friendship. This actually occurred: many of the Quraysh who had fought against the Prophet (peace be upon him) and the believers later entered Islam on the day of the conquest of Makkah, and their hearts were filled with love for their new brothers and sisters in faith.
Then the verse reminds you of two magnificent attributes of your Lord: "And Allah is All-Powerful" — He is able to do whatever He wills, including softening the hardest of hearts and reconciling the most bitter of enemies. Nothing is difficult for Him. And "Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful" — He forgives the mistakes you may have made in the past, such as showing undue loyalty to disbelievers out of fear or affection, and He showers His mercy upon you. So do not despair, and do not let the current state of affairs weigh heavily on your hearts. Turn to Allah, trust in His power, and hope for His mercy. He can transform your trials into triumphs and your estrangements into embraces of love, for nothing is beyond His reach. Let this verse fill you with optimism and strengthen your reliance on Allah, who is the Turner of Hearts and the Master of all affairs.
