Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- ذَلُولًا (Dhalūlan): Made submissive, soft, and easy to traverse — not rigid or rebellious.
- مَنَاكِبِهَا (Manākibihā): Its sides, regions, or broad expanses — the various corners and directions of the earth.
- النُّشُورُ (An-Nushūr): The resurrection, the rising from the graves for accountability.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse draws our attention to one of the greatest signs of Allah’s mercy and power: the earth itself. Allah — and He alone — is the One who made the earth submissive and gentle for you. It is not harsh or unyielding; rather, it is spread out, firm, and suitable for you to live upon, build upon, and cultivate. It carries your weight, provides you with stability, and does not shake or toss you about. This is a profound blessing that we often take for granted.
Then Allah commands us: “So walk in its regions” — meaning, travel through the earth, move about in its various lands, seek your livelihoods, and explore the provisions that Allah has placed within it. This is not merely a permission but an encouragement to strive and work. The verse then adds: “And eat from His provision” — for everything you consume, every fruit, grain, and sustenance you enjoy, comes from Allah’s boundless mercy. He has prepared it for you, and He invites you to partake of it with gratitude.
Finally, the verse concludes with a powerful reminder: “And to Him is the resurrection.” This life, with all its pursuits and pleasures, is not the end. You will all return to your Lord, and He will hold you accountable for how you used this earth, how you earned your provision, and how you spent your days. So let your walking, your working, and your eating all be done with the awareness that you are on a journey — and your final destination is before your Creator.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear believer, contemplate this verse deeply. The same earth that you walk upon is a testimony to Allah’s care for you. He did not create it for you to be idle or arrogant, but to be a place of fruitful effort and sincere worship. So go out, seek lawful provision, and enjoy the good things Allah has given you — but never forget that your true home is with Him. Let every step you take on this earth remind you of the day you will stand before Him. Make your work an act of worship by being honest, kind, and mindful of Allah in all your dealings. And let your gratitude for His provision draw you closer to Him, not further away. This is the path of the successful — those who live in this world with purpose, and who look forward to the eternal meeting with their Lord with hope and preparation.
