Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Kh-s-f (يَخْسِفَ): To cause the earth to swallow or sink something beneath its surface, burying it completely.
- Tamūr (تَمُور): To shake, sway, and move violently back and forth, like a restless, heaving mass.
Tafsir (Explanation):
O you who deny the truth and turn away from your Lord, do you truly feel secure from the One Who is above the heavens—Allah, the Most High, the Most Powerful—that He might command the earth to swallow you whole, just as it swallowed Qārūn (Korah) and his treasures? The very ground beneath your feet, which you walk upon with confidence and build your lives upon, could suddenly convulse and tremble, sinking you into its depths, leaving no trace of you behind. After being stable and firm, it would heave and surge with you, turning your security into utter destruction in the blink of an eye.
This verse is a profound call to reflect on your relationship with your Creator. The One Who raised the heavens without pillars and spread the earth beneath you is the same One Who holds your existence in His Hands at every moment. Your safety is not guaranteed by your strength, your wealth, or your numbers—it is guaranteed only by His mercy and His decree. So, do not be lulled into arrogance or heedlessness, for the very ground you stand on is a testament to His power: it can be your resting place or your grave, depending on His will.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, ponder this: the earth you stand on is a sign of Allah's immense favor. He made it smooth and submissive for you, so you could build, travel, and thrive upon it. Yet, the same earth can become a means of punishment if you persist in disbelief and disobedience. But Allah, in His infinite mercy, does not hasten your destruction—He warns you, again and again, through His verses and His messengers, so that you might return to Him. This is not a threat to instill despair, but a loving call to awaken your heart. Turn to your Lord today, before the earth turns against you, and find peace in the One Who controls all things. His door of repentance is open, and His mercy encompasses all—so why not take that step toward Him now?
