Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- حاصِبًا (Hasiban): A violent wind that pelts with stones or gravel—a destructive storm sent as divine punishment.
- مَن فِي السَّمَاءِ (Man fi al-Sama’): The One Who is above the heavens—Allah, exalted and majestic, in a manner befitting His glory, without likening Him to His creation.
- نَذِيرِ (Nadhir): My warning—the divine admonition delivered through the Prophet (peace be upon him).
Explanation of the Verse:
After the previous verse addressed the fear of the earth swallowing the disbelievers, this verse turns to another dimension of Allah’s power: the sky. Allah asks the disbelievers of Mecca, in a tone of stern rebuke: "Do you feel secure from the One Who is above the heavens—the Lord of the lofty throne—that He might send upon you a storm of stones, just as He did to the people of Lot when they persisted in their wickedness?" This is a direct challenge to their false sense of safety, reminding them that the same sky they look upon for rain and mercy can also unleash destruction upon them if they continue in their denial.
The verse then delivers a chilling promise: "Then you will come to know how My warning was!" This means that when the punishment actually descends upon them—when they witness the very torment they were warned about—they will fully realize the truth of the Prophet’s message and the severity of Allah’s threat. But at that moment, knowledge will be of no benefit to them, for the time of repentance will have passed. The warning was given clearly, but they chose mockery over reflection.
This verse also affirms the attribute of Allah’s elevation (al-‘Uluww)—that He is above His creation in His essence and majesty, as befits His perfection, without any resemblance to His creatures. This is a fundamental belief of Ahl al-Sunnah, established by the Qur’an, the Sunnah, and the consensus of the early generations of Muslims.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on the mercy and might of your Lord. The very sky that showers you with rain, that holds the sun and the moon in perfect order, is under His complete command. If He wills, it becomes a source of life; if He wills, it becomes a source of destruction. Yet, in His infinite mercy, He does not hasten the punishment—He gives you time, He sends His messengers, and He opens the door of repentance again and again. Do not be like those who only believe when they see the torment with their own eyes, for then belief brings no benefit. Come to Allah now, with a sincere heart, and embrace the truth before the warning becomes a reality. The Qur’an is not a book of stories—it is a living call to salvation. Respond to it today, and you will find peace in this life and the next.
