Word Meanings:
- أَمْ (Am): Here it means "Or" — used for rebuke and correction, not for a genuine question.
- تَسْأَلُهُمْ أَجْرًا (Tas'aluhum ajran): Do you ask them for a payment or reward.
- مَغْرَمٍ (Maghram): A debt, fine, or financial burden that one is obliged to pay.
- مُثْقَلُونَ (Muthqalun): Overloaded, weighed down heavily.
Explanation of the Verse:
O Messenger, Allah is addressing you here in a gentle, reassuring tone to clear any doubt about why the disbelievers reject your call. He asks: "Are you asking them for a fee or a worldly reward in return for delivering the message of Islam? Is that why they are turning away from you — because they feel they would be burdened with a heavy financial debt they cannot afford to pay?"
The answer, of course, is an emphatic "No!" You, O Muhammad, have never asked them for any wealth or compensation. You call them purely for their own good, seeking nothing but their salvation and happiness in this life and the Hereafter. So their refusal is not because of any burden you placed upon them — it is purely out of arrogance, stubbornness, and blind following of their forefathers.
This verse is a powerful rebuke to the disbelievers. It exposes the falseness of their excuses. They claimed they could not follow you because of some hardship, yet you asked nothing from them. What then is their real excuse? The only thing left is that they claim to have knowledge of the unseen, believing they are better than the believers — a claim that has no proof whatsoever.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, reflect on the beauty of this message. The Prophet ﷺ spent his entire life calling people to the truth, enduring persecution, boycott, and hardship — all without asking a single penny from anyone. His only "reward" was the pleasure of Allah and the guidance of humanity. This is the hallmark of true sincerity: when a caller to Allah asks nothing but your own good.
So when you hear the call of truth, do not let false excuses hold you back. The path of faith does not burden you with debts — it liberates you from the heaviest burden of all: the weight of sin and ignorance. Embrace it with an open heart, and you will find peace that no worldly wealth can ever provide.
