Key Words and Phrases:

  • Silsilah (سِلْسِلَةٍ): A chain, specifically one made of iron or other heavy material used for binding in Hell.
  • Dhur'uha (ذَرْعُهَا): Its length or extent, measured from end to end.
  • Sab'oona Dhira'an (سَبْعُونَ ذِرَاعًا): Seventy cubits—a cubit being the distance from the elbow to the tip of the middle finger, indicating an immense, terrifying length.
  • Faslukuhu (فَاسْلُكُوهُ): "Insert him into it" or "thread him through it"—a command to the angels of punishment to force the sinner into this chain, piercing or wrapping it around him.

Explanation of the Verse:

After the stern command is given to seize the wicked criminal and bind his hands to his neck with iron collars, and after he is cast into the blazing Fire to endure its scorching heat, a further, even more humiliating punishment awaits him. The angels are ordered to take a massive chain—whose length is seventy cubits, stretching far beyond what the human mind can fully grasp—and to thread this sinner through it, wrapping it around his body so tightly that he becomes entangled within its links. This is not merely a physical restraint; it is a symbol of his complete subjugation and the inescapable consequences of his arrogance and disbelief. The chain is so vast and heavy that it overwhelms him entirely, leaving him utterly powerless, dragged and confined within its crushing grip as he suffers the torment of the Fire.

This vivid imagery serves as a stark warning: just as this person refused to submit to the truth in his worldly life, refusing to believe in the Oneness of Allah and failing to guide others toward compassion—such as feeding the needy—he is now forced into a state of absolute submission, bound by chains that he cannot break. The length of seventy cubits emphasizes the magnitude of his error and the perfection of divine justice, where every act of defiance is met with a fitting, overwhelming consequence.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, let this scene awaken your heart! The chains of Hell are not for those who humble themselves before their Lord, who believe in His mercy, and who extend a helping hand to the poor and hungry. Allah, in His infinite wisdom, has shown us the fate of the wicked so that we may rush toward His forgiveness and grace. Today, you have the chance to free yourself from every spiritual chain by uttering the testimony of faith, by praying, and by showing kindness to others. Do not wait until the day when no ransom can save you and no plea can be heard. Turn to Allah now, for His door of repentance is wide open, and His love for those who return to Him is greater than any punishment He has warned us about. Embrace the light of Islam, and you will find peace in this life and safety in the next—far from that chain of seventy cubits, in gardens of eternal delight.

📜 Verse 30-34 — Al-Haqqah

30خُذُوهُ فَغُلُّوهُ
[Allah will say], "Seize him and shackle him.
31ثُمَّ الْجَحِيمَ صَلُّوهُ
Then into Hellfire drive him.
32ثُمَّ فِي سِلْسِلَةٍ ذَرْعُهَا سَبْعُونَ ذِرَاعًا فَاسْلُكُوهُ
Then into a chain whose length is seventy cubits insert him."
33إِنَّهُ كَانَ لَا يُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ الْعَظِيمِ
Indeed, he did not used to believe in Allah, the Most Great,
34وَلَا يَحُضُّ عَلَىٰ طَعَامِ الْمِسْكِينِ
Nor did he encourage the feeding of the poor.
