Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- إِنَّهُ (innahu): Indeed, he — referring to the sinful man described in the preceding verses.
- كَانَ (kāna): He was — indicating a continuous, persistent state in his past life.
- لَا يُؤْمِنُ (lā yu'minu): He did not believe — meaning he refused to affirm with his heart and act upon the truth.
- بِاللَّهِ الْعَظِيمِ (billāhil-ʿAẓīm): In Allah, the Magnificent — the One Who possesses ultimate greatness, majesty, and perfection in His essence, attributes, and actions.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse forms part of the scene on the Day of Judgment, where the keepers of Hell are commanded to seize the wicked criminal, bind his hands to his neck with chains, cast him into the blazing Fire, and then insert him into a chain of iron seventy cubits long. The reason for this severe punishment is then stated: "Indeed, he was one who did not believe in Allah, the Magnificent."
This means that throughout his worldly life, he refused to affirm the oneness of Allah, rejected His sovereignty, and denied His absolute greatness. His disbelief was not a momentary lapse but a persistent trait — he lived and died upon it. He did not acknowledge that Allah alone is the true God, worthy of worship, with no partner or associate. Consequently, he did not follow Allah's guidance, nor did he act upon His commandments. His lack of faith was the root cause of every evil deed he committed, including his refusal to encourage the feeding of the poor and needy, as mentioned in the following verse.
The connection between his disbelief and his punishment is clear: because he denied the greatness of Allah in this world, he now faces the humiliating and agonizing consequences in the Hereafter. His punishment is a direct reflection of his arrogance and ingratitude toward his Creator.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse serves as a profound reminder for every soul: our deeds in this life are not hidden from Allah, and the ultimate outcome of disbelief is a punishment that no mind can fully comprehend. Yet, the door of repentance remains open until the moment of death. Allah, the Magnificent, is not only Just in His punishment but also Most Merciful in His forgiveness. He has sent messengers, revealed scriptures, and provided countless signs so that no one may claim ignorance. Let this verse awaken in us a deep reverence for Allah's greatness and a sincere commitment to faith — for belief in Him is the foundation upon which every good action is built, and it is the key to eternal success. Embrace the truth today, before the day comes when no excuse will be accepted, and no return to this world will be granted.
