Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Qaryah (قَرْيَةٍ): A town, city, or community.
- Ahlaknāha (أَهْلَكْنَاهَا): We destroyed it — meaning the destruction of its inhabitants due to their persistent disbelief and wrongdoing.
- Ba'sunā (بَأْسُنَا): Our severe punishment or divine retribution.
- Bayātān (بَيَاتًا): At night, while the people were asleep and unaware.
- Qā'ilūn (قَائِلُونَ): Those taking a midday rest or nap (the "qaylūlah" — resting during the early afternoon, even if not fully asleep).
The Interpretation:
How many towns and civilizations have been destroyed by Our divine punishment because their people rejected the messengers and persisted in their arrogance and sin! Their destruction came suddenly — sometimes while they were fast asleep in the depths of the night, and sometimes while they were resting peacefully in the middle of the day, completely heedless of what was about to befall them.
Allah, in His infinite wisdom, specifically mentions these two times — the night and the midday rest — because they are moments of tranquility, stillness, and vulnerability. When calamity strikes at such times, it is far more terrifying and severe. The people had no chance to prepare, no opportunity to flee, and no power to defend themselves. Their false gods, whom they worshipped and relied upon, could not protect them in the slightest.
This verse serves as a profound warning to all of humanity: do not be deceived by the temporary security you feel in this world. The punishment of Allah can come at any moment, in any circumstance — when you least expect it. No amount of wealth, power, or false deities can shield you from His justice.
Yet, in this same warning lies a beautiful invitation: the door of repentance is open *now*, before that inevitable moment arrives. Allah does not hasten His punishment out of haste, but out of mercy — giving you time to turn back to Him. So seize this precious opportunity, for the One who created you is the Most Merciful, and His forgiveness is greater than any sin you could commit. Do not wait until the night falls or the midday rest comes, for you do not know which moment will be your last. Return to your Lord with a sincere heart, and He will welcome you with open arms, erasing your past and granting you a life of peace and purpose.
