Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "Ma unzila ilaykum" — That which has been revealed to you, namely the Qur'an and the Sunnah (the prophetic teachings).
- "Awliya'a" — Protectors, allies, or guides taken as authorities besides Allah, such as devils, corrupt scholars, or anyone whose commands override Allah's revelation.
- "Tadhakkarun" — To remember, take heed, or be admonished; to reflect and return to the truth.
Explanation of the Verse:
O people, follow what your Lord has sent down to you — the Qur'an and the authentic teachings of His Messenger (peace be upon him) — by obeying its commands and avoiding its prohibitions. Do not take, besides Allah, any protectors or guides whom you obey in defiance of His command, whether they be devils who whisper evil, or corrupt religious leaders who distort the truth for their own interests. If you turn to such figures and abandon what Allah has revealed, you have placed them in a position that belongs only to your Creator. Yet, how little you reflect and take heed! If you truly remembered Allah's majesty, His mercy, and His justice, you would never prefer the words of any creature over the words of your Lord. You would hasten to follow His guidance, for in it lies your success in this life and the next.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, this verse is a gentle yet firm call from your Lord, who knows what is best for you. He did not leave you wandering in darkness — He sent down a complete guide, a light for your path, and a mercy for your heart. Every command in the Qur'an is a protection for you, and every prohibition is a shield against harm. When you cling to His revelation, you are never alone; you are under the care of the Most Merciful. But when you turn to other "protectors" — whether they be people, ideologies, or desires — you trade the infinite wisdom of Allah for the flawed opinions of creation. Reflect, even for a moment: who knows you better than the One who created you? Who loves you more than the One who provided for you before you even asked? So come back to His Book, let it be your guide, and you will find peace that no worldly authority can ever give. The door of repentance is open, and your Lord is waiting with boundless mercy.
