Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Balad al-Tayyib: The good, pure land with wholesome soil.
- Nakadan: With difficulty, hardship, and scant, poor yield.
Explanation of the Verse:
Allah, the Most High, presents a profound and beautiful parable that resonates with the heart of every thoughtful person. He compares the believer and the disbeliever to two types of land upon which rain falls. The good, fertile land—when it receives water—produits lush, beneficial vegetation by the permission and will of its Lord. Likewise, the believer, when the verses of Allah and words of wisdom reach him, receives them with an open heart, reflects upon them, and they bear fruit in his life as righteous deeds, good character, and sincere obedience to Allah.
On the other hand, the barren, salty, and impure land—even if the same rain falls upon it—does not yield anything except what is difficult, weak, and of no benefit. Similarly, the disbeliever and the heedless heart hear the same Qur'an and the same admonitions, yet they do not benefit from them; no good deeds spring forth from them, and they remain deprived of the guidance that brings life to souls.
Allah then says: "Thus do We explain in detail the signs for a people who give thanks." This means that just as this parable is presented in such a clear and striking manner, Allah diversifies and clarifies His proofs and evidences in various ways so that those who are grateful for His blessings may reflect, understand, and act upon the truth. Gratitude here is not merely a word on the tongue; it is the heart's recognition of Allah's favor, the tongue's praise, and the limbs' obedience. Such people are the ones who truly benefit from the Qur'an, for their hearts are like the fertile soil, ready to receive the rain of revelation and bring forth the harvest of faith and good deeds.
This verse is a gentle and powerful invitation for every soul to examine its own state: Are you like the good land that flourishes with the rain of guidance, or like the barren land that remains hard and unyielding? The choice is yours, and the mercy of Allah is vast—He has sent down the Qur'an as living water for all hearts, and He calls you to open your heart to it, so that you may be among those who give thanks and attain true success in this life and the Hereafter.
