Word Meanings:
- "Nūḥan" (نُوحًا): Prophet Noah (peace be upon him), one of the greatest messengers sent by Allah.
- "Qawmihi" (قَوْمِهِ): His people, who were worshippers of idols.
- "I'lāh" (إِلَٰه): A deity or object of worship.
- "ʿAdhāba yawmin ʿaẓīm" (عَذَابَ يَوْمٍ عَظِيمٍ): The punishment of a tremendous day — either the Day of Resurrection or the day of the great flood.
Tafsir (Explanation):
Indeed, Allah sent His Prophet Noah (peace be upon him) to his people as a messenger of mercy and guidance. Noah's people had strayed far from the truth, worshipping idols and statues instead of their Creator. With a heart full of compassion and sincere concern for their welfare, Noah stood before them and delivered the core message of all prophets: "O my people, worship Allah alone."
He made it crystal clear that there is no deity worthy of worship besides Allah — neither in the heavens nor on the earth. All other so-called gods were mere inventions of their own hands, incapable of benefit or harm. Noah's call was not merely a theological statement; it was an invitation to free themselves from the chains of falsehood and return to their natural disposition (fiṭrah) — the worship of the One True God.
Then, with a tone of loving warning, he added: "Indeed, I fear for you the punishment of a mighty Day." This was not an empty threat or a display of arrogance. Rather, it was the cry of a caring prophet who dreaded that his people might face the severe consequences of their persistence in disbelief — whether in this world through the devastating flood, or in the Hereafter through the torment of the Day of Judgment.
This verse carries a timeless lesson for every believer: the essence of Islam is pure monotheism (Tawḥīd) — directing all acts of worship, devotion, and submission to Allah alone. It also teaches us the beautiful manner of daʿwah: calling others with gentleness, clarity, and genuine concern for their salvation. Noah did not begin with threats or harshness; he began with "O my people" — a phrase of endearment and brotherhood — and he presented the truth with wisdom and love.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, just as Noah called his people to worship Allah alone, this same call reaches you today. Allah has not created you in vain, nor has He left you without guidance. He sent prophets, revealed books, and made the path to Paradise clear. The greatest honor you can attain is to submit your heart to your Creator, to worship Him with sincerity, and to live a life pleasing to Him. Do not wait until the punishment arrives — whether in this life or the next — to respond to His call. Open your heart to the truth today, and you will find peace, purpose, and eternal success. For Allah's mercy is vast, and His door of repentance is open to all who turn to Him with a sincere heart.
