Key Words and Their Meanings:
- "Fa anjaynahu" — So We saved him (Hud, peace be upon him).
- "Wa allatheena ma'ahu" — And those who were with him (the believers).
- "Birahmatin minna" — By mercy from Us (Allah).
- "Wa qata'na dabira" — And We cut off the roots (i.e., completely destroyed and uprooted).
- "Allatheena kaththabu bi-ayatina" — Those who denied Our signs (revelations, miracles, and messengers).
- "Wa ma kanu mu'minin" — And they were not believers (they persisted in disbelief).
Explanation of the Verse:
After the people of 'Ad rejected the message of Prophet Hud (peace be upon him) and stubbornly refused to believe despite the clear signs, the punishment of Allah descended upon them — a fierce, destructive wind that annihilated them entirely. In this verse, Allah tells us that He saved Hud and the believers who were with him out of His immense mercy. This salvation was not earned by their own power or status, but was a pure gift of divine grace — a mercy that protected them from the devastating fate that befell the disbelievers.
Then Allah says: "And We cut off the roots of those who denied Our signs." This means He completely eradicated them — not a single one of them remained. Their homes, their power, their wealth, and their very existence were wiped out, leaving no trace behind. This was the ultimate consequence of their arrogance and their refusal to accept the truth.
The verse concludes with a profound statement: "And they were not believers." This is not merely a description of their state, but a clarification of the reason for their destruction — they combined the worst of both worlds: they rejected Allah's signs and failed to do righteous deeds. Their hearts were sealed against faith, and so they deserved the punishment that came upon them.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
This verse carries a timeless lesson for every generation. The mercy of Allah is vast and encompasses all things — but it is granted to those who turn to Him in sincerity and belief. The believers who were saved with Hud were not saved because they were stronger or wealthier than the disbelievers; they were saved because of their faith and their trust in their Lord. This teaches us that true success lies not in worldly power, but in the strength of our connection with Allah.
How beautiful is the promise of Allah to those who believe and remain steadfast! Just as He saved Hud and his companions from destruction, He will save His believing servants from every hardship and trial. The storms of life may rage, the winds of adversity may blow fiercely, but the believer who holds fast to Allah will always find a safe harbor in His mercy.
Let this verse inspire you to examine your own heart: Are you among those who believe in Allah's signs and act upon them? Are you among those who seek His mercy and protection? The door of repentance is always open, and the mercy of Allah is closer to you than your own jugular vein. Do not delay — turn to Him today, and you will find that His mercy is greater than any sin, and His protection is stronger than any enemy.
