Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Khāshi‘atan abṣāruhum: Their eyes will be downcast, humbled, and lowered in submission and fear.
- Tarhaquhum dhilla: Utter disgrace and humiliation will cover and overwhelm them.
- Yū‘adūn: The promise that was made to them—the threat of punishment—which they used to deny and mock.
Tafsir (Explanation):
On that Day of Resurrection, the disbelievers will emerge from their graves in haste and panic, rushing frantically as if they were racing toward their false idols and deities in the worldly life—those gods they had invented and worshipped besides Allah. But now, their eyes will be cast down in utter humility, unable to lift their gaze out of sheer terror and shame. A deep, all-encompassing disgrace will envelop them, covering them from every side, leaving them utterly broken and humiliated before their Lord.
This is the very Day they were promised in the worldly life—the Day of accountability and recompense—which they used to mock, ridicule, and deny. They laughed at the warnings of the prophets and said, "When will this promise come to pass, if you are truthful?" Now, that promise has become a living reality, and they stand before it powerless, their arrogance turned to dust, their pride replaced by the weight of their own ruin.
A Da‘wah Reflection:
Dear reader, pause and reflect: every soul will stand before its Creator, and no amount of worldly pride, wealth, or power will shield anyone from that moment. The Qur’an paints this scene not to frighten you into despair, but to awaken your heart while there is still time. Today, you have the chance to lower your eyes in humility before Allah voluntarily—through prayer, repentance, and submission—so that you are not forced to lower them in disgrace on that Day. The choice is yours: a voluntary bow in this life that elevates your rank, or an involuntary humiliation in the next that crushes your soul. Allah, in His infinite mercy, has opened the door of repentance wide; do not let it close while you are still able to walk through it. Embrace Islam’s beautiful call to turn back to your Lord, and you will find peace in this world and safety in the next.
