Key Words and Meanings:

  • Al-Ajdath (الأجداث): The graves or tombs.
  • Sira’an (سِرَاعًا): Hastily, quickly, in a state of urgency.
  • Nusub (نُصُب): An idol or a raised standard/statue that was set up to be worshipped instead of Allah.
  • Yoofidun (يُوفِضُونَ): They rush, hasten, or speed towards something with eagerness and swiftness.

Explanation of the Verse:

On that Day—the Day of Resurrection—they will emerge from their graves in a frantic rush, responding to the call of the Lord without any delay. Their haste will be so intense that it will resemble the way they used to sprint towards their idols and false deities in the worldly life, eager to honour them, touch them, and show their devotion. Just as they once raced to their fabricated gods, they will now race towards the terrifying reality of the Hereafter, driven by the overwhelming command of Allah. Their eyes will be cast down in humiliation, and disgrace will cover them completely. This is the very Day they were promised in the world, the Day they mocked and denied. Now, it has arrived, and there is no escape from it.

A Call to Reflection:

Imagine the scene: people bursting forth from their graves, not walking but racing, their hearts pounding with fear, their eyes lowered in shame. This vivid image is a powerful reminder that the Hereafter is not a distant myth—it is a certainty that awaits every soul. The very idols and distractions they once ran after in life will be of no avail on that Day. So, dear reader, let this verse awaken your heart. Do not let your life be spent chasing false goals and temporary pleasures, as if they were idols that can save you. Instead, race towards what truly matters: the pleasure of Allah, the love of His Messenger ﷺ, and the deeds that will light your path on that terrifying Day. The graves will not hold us forever; the question is: when we emerge, will we be among those who rush towards mercy, or among those who rush towards regret? Choose now, before that Day comes when no choice remains.

📜 Verse 41-44 — Al-Ma'arij

41عَلَىٰ أَن نُّبَدِّلَ خَيْرًا مِّنْهُمْ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَسْبُوقِينَ
To replace them with better than them; and We are not to be outdone.
42فَذَرْهُمْ يَخُوضُوا وَيَلْعَبُوا حَتَّىٰ يُلَاقُوا يَوْمَهُمُ الَّذِي يُوعَدُونَ
So leave them to converse vainly and amuse themselves until they meet their Day which they are promised -
43يَوْمَ يَخْرُجُونَ مِنَ الْأَجْدَاثِ سِرَاعًا كَأَنَّهُمْ إِلَىٰ نُصُبٍ يُوفِضُونَ
The Day they will emerge from the graves rapidly as if they were, toward an erected idol, hastening.
44خَاشِعَةً أَبْصَارُهُمْ تَرْهَقُهُمْ ذِلَّةٌ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ الْيَوْمُ الَّذِي كَانُوا يُوعَدُونَ
Their eyes humbled, humiliation will cover them. That is the Day which they had been promised.
