Surah Nuh — Verse 19

• Bisāṭan (بِسَاطًا): A spread-out carpet or flat expanse, meaning the earth has been made smooth, level, and habitable like a resting mat.

Tafsir (Explanation):

Allah—in His infinite mercy and wisdom—has made the earth for you, O humanity, as a vast, spread-out carpet. He did not create it rugged and unlivable, but rather flattened it, smoothed it, and prepared it for your dwelling, your movement, and your rest. Just as a carpet is laid out for comfort and ease, so too has the earth been spread beneath your feet—stable, firm, and suitable for building, farming, and traveling. This is a profound sign of Allah’s care for His creation: He did not leave you without a home, but gave you a world that welcomes you, sustains you, and accommodates all your needs.

This verse follows the call of Prophet Nuh (peace be upon him) to his people, reminding them of Allah’s blessings so that they might reflect and turn back to Him. The earth being spread like a carpet is not a random fact—it is an invitation to gratitude. When you walk on solid ground, sleep on its surface, plant your seeds in its soil, and travel its wide roads, remember that it is Allah who made all of this possible. He could have made the earth harsh and inhospitable, but He chose to make it a place of ease and provision.

Dear reader, look around you. The ground beneath your feet—so steady, so dependable—is a gift from your Lord. It does not shake beneath you, nor does it swallow you, but it holds you gently as you go about your life. This is not by chance; it is by design. Allah says, "And Allah has made the earth for you a carpet" —so that you may know His kindness, appreciate His blessings, and worship Him with a grateful heart. Let this simple truth draw you closer to Him. For if He has cared for your physical comfort in this world, how much more does He care for your spiritual well-being? Turn to Him, thank Him, and live your life upon this earth as one who remembers its Creator—for He is the One who spread it for you, and He is the One who will return you to it, and raise you from it on the Day of Judgment.
