Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Sihr (سِحْرٌ): Magic or sorcery — a deceptive act that bewitches the eyes and minds of people, making falsehood appear as truth.
  • Yu'thar (يُؤْثَر): Transmitted or narrated from others — meaning it is passed down from previous generations, not something new or divine.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse continues the story of one of the most stubborn opponents of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) — a man who exhausted every means to discredit the Qur'an. After deep reflection and careful planning, he stood before his people and declared about the Qur'an: "This is nothing but magic that has been transmitted from the ancients." He claimed that the Prophet had merely learned this from earlier sorcerers and storytellers, then presented it as revelation from Allah.

What a desperate claim this was! The Qur'an, with its unparalleled eloquence, profound wisdom, and transformative power, was reduced by this man to mere "inherited magic." Yet his own conscience knew the truth — for he had spent days and nights pondering how to refute it, and when every avenue of criticism failed him, he resorted to this hollow accusation. The very effort he put into finding fault with the Qur'an is itself a testimony to its miraculous nature. If it were truly the words of a man, would the most eloquent Arabs of that time have been so utterly unable to produce anything like it?

This verse teaches us a timeless lesson: when hearts are sealed with arrogance and pride, even the clearest truth appears as something to be rejected. The disbelievers of Makkah were not ignorant of the Qur'an's beauty — they were simply unwilling to submit to it, because submission meant abandoning their status, their idols, and their worldly interests.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, look at how far a person can go in self-deception! This man knew the Qur'an was not magic — he knew it in his heart, but his ego refused to bow. Today, many people turn away from the Qur'an not because they find it lacking, but because they fear what it demands of them: sincerity, humility, and accountability before Allah. Yet the Qur'an is not a burden — it is a mercy, a healing for the hearts, and a light that guides through the darkness of this world. Open your heart to it, and you will find that it speaks to your soul in ways no human words ever could. It is not magic — it is the living Word of the Creator, preserved for all of humanity until the end of time. Will you not listen with an open heart?

📜 Verse 22-26 — Al-Muddaththir

22ثُمَّ عَبَسَ وَبَسَرَ
Then he frowned and scowled;
23ثُمَّ أَدْبَرَ وَاسْتَكْبَرَ
Then he turned back and was arrogant
24فَقَالَ إِنْ هَٰذَا إِلَّا سِحْرٌ يُؤْثَرُ
And said, "This is not but magic imitated [from others].
25إِنْ هَٰذَا إِلَّا قَوْلُ الْبَشَرِ
This is not but the word of a human being."
26سَأُصْلِيهِ سَقَرَ
I will drive him into Saqar.
