Word Meanings:

  • أَدْبَرَ (Adbara): Turned away, retreated, or withdrew — specifically, turning one's back on something in rejection.
  • وَاسْتَكْبَرَ (Wastakbara): Showed arrogance, pride, and haughtiness — refusing to submit or accept the truth out of self-importance.

Explanation of the Verse:

After this person — who is described in the preceding verses — had reflected and devised his plan to attack the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the Quran, he then turned away from the truth in rejection and displayed sheer arrogance. He refused to humble himself before the message of Allah, and his pride prevented him from accepting the guidance that was presented to him. This verse captures the moment when a person, fully aware of the truth, chooses to abandon it — not out of ignorance, but out of stubbornness and self-conceit. His turning away was not a simple dismissal; it was a deliberate, defiant retreat from the call of monotheism and the prophethood of Muhammad (peace be upon him).

This brief but powerful description paints a vivid picture of the human condition when arrogance overcomes reason. The man had already exhausted his mental efforts to find fault with the Quran, and when he failed, his ego refused to surrender. Instead of admitting the truth, he walked away with pride, as if to say, "I am too great to follow this."

A Call to Reflection:

This verse serves as a timeless warning to every soul that encounters the truth. How often do we find ourselves face-to-face with undeniable guidance, yet our pride holds us back from accepting it? The Quran repeatedly emphasizes that the greatest barrier to faith is not intellectual doubt, but spiritual arrogance — the unwillingness to submit. Islam invites you to a beautiful humility: the humility of placing your forehead on the ground in prostration to your Creator, the humility of admitting that He knows what you do not, and the humility of following a Prophet whose character was described by Allah Himself as "tremendous."

Do not let your status, your wealth, or your self-image become a wall between you and the peace that comes with faith. The door of repentance is always open, and the mercy of Allah is far greater than any sin. Turn to Him with a sincere heart, and you will find that true honor lies not in arrogance, but in submission to the One who created you.

📜 Verse 21-25 — Al-Muddaththir

21ثُمَّ نَظَرَ
Then he considered [again];
22ثُمَّ عَبَسَ وَبَسَرَ
Then he frowned and scowled;
23ثُمَّ أَدْبَرَ وَاسْتَكْبَرَ
Then he turned back and was arrogant
24فَقَالَ إِنْ هَٰذَا إِلَّا سِحْرٌ يُؤْثَرُ
And said, "This is not but magic imitated [from others].
25إِنْ هَٰذَا إِلَّا قَوْلُ الْبَشَرِ
This is not but the word of a human being."
