Surah Al-Muddaththir — Verse 30

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse refers to the guardians of Hellfire—nineteen mighty angels, known as *az-zabāniyah*, who are entrusted with the punishment of its inhabitants. These are not ordinary angels; they are stern, powerful, and relentless in carrying out Allah’s command. They neither disobey Allah in what He orders them nor do they show any mercy to the wicked. Their number—nineteen—is a precise decree from Allah, and no one knows its full wisdom except Him. Some scholars note that this specific number serves as a test for the disbelievers and a means to strengthen the faith of the believers, as mentioned elsewhere in the Qur’an.

The verse comes in the context of warning those who reject the truth, particularly the arrogant disbelievers of Quraysh who mocked the Qur’an.
