Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • ʿAlayhā: Upon it (i.e., upon Hellfire)
  • Tisʿata ʿAshara: Nineteen

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse refers to the guardians of Hellfire—nineteen mighty angels, known as *az-zabāniyah*, who are entrusted with the punishment of its inhabitants. These are not ordinary angels; they are stern, powerful, and relentless in carrying out Allah’s command. They neither disobey Allah in what He orders them nor do they show any mercy to the wicked. Their number—nineteen—is a precise decree from Allah, and no one knows its full wisdom except Him. Some scholars note that this specific number serves as a test for the disbelievers and a means to strengthen the faith of the believers, as mentioned elsewhere in the Qur’an.

The verse comes in the context of warning those who reject the truth, particularly the arrogant disbelievers of Quraysh who mocked the Qur’an. Allah reminds them that Hellfire is not a place to be taken lightly—it is guarded by formidable angels who will execute justice without hesitation. This is a call to reflect: if the guardians of Hell are so severe, then how severe must the punishment itself be? And if the punishment is so severe, then how great is the mercy of Allah for those who turn to Him in repentance and obedience?

A Daʿwah Reflection:

Dear reader, this verse is not meant to instill despair but to awaken the heart. Allah, in His infinite mercy, has sent this warning so that we may never become complacent about our deeds. He has given us the Qur’an, the Prophet ﷺ, and countless opportunities to return to Him. The nineteen angels are a reminder that Allah’s justice is perfect and inescapable—but His mercy is even greater. No sin is too great to be forgiven if you sincerely repent before death reaches you. Let this verse motivate you to race toward good deeds, to seek Allah’s protection from the Fire, and to live a life that pleases Him. The door of repentance is open until the final moment—so why wait? Turn to Allah now, and He will turn to you with forgiveness and love.

📜 Verse 28-32 — Al-Muddaththir

It lets nothing remain and leaves nothing [unburned],
Blackening the skins.
Over it are nineteen [angels].
And We have not made the keepers of the Fire except angels. And We have not made their number except as a trial for those who disbelieve - that those who were given the Scripture will be convinced and those who have believed will increase in faith and those who were given the Scripture and the believers will not doubt and that those in whose hearts is hypocrisy and the disbelievers will say, "What does Allah intend by this as an example?" Thus does Allah leave astray whom He wills and guides whom He wills. And none knows the soldiers of your Lord except Him. And mention of the Fire is not but a reminder to humanity.
