Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Thiyabaka (ثِيَابَكَ): Your garments/clothing. In this context, it also carries the metaphorical meaning of one's self, soul, or character.
- Tahhir (فَطَهِّرْ): Purify, cleanse, make free from all impurities—both physical and spiritual.
Explanation of the Verse:
This noble verse is a direct command from Allah to His Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), and by extension, to every believer who follows his path. After the initial call to arise and warn humanity, Allah instructs: "And your garments, purify them."
This command carries two profound meanings:
First, it is a literal instruction to keep one's clothing and physical appearance clean and free from impurities, for a Muslim is one who values purity in all aspects of life. Cleanliness of the body and garments is a reflection of the inner purity of the heart, and it is said that the outward state often mirrors the inward state. A believer who stands before Allah in prayer should be presentable and pure, as this is a sign of respect for the Divine presence.
Second, and more deeply, "garments" here symbolically refers to one's soul, character, and conduct. Just as clothing covers the body, one's deeds and character cover the essence of who they are. Therefore, the command is to purify the soul from sins, cleanse the heart from hypocrisy and arrogance, and wash away the stains of disobedience. It is a call to abandon all forms of spiritual filth—shirk (associating partners with Allah), lying, backbiting, envy, and every sinful habit that tarnishes the beauty of the believer's inner self.
This verse beautifully connects the outer and inner dimensions of purification. It teaches us that Islam is a complete way of life that harmonizes the physical and the spiritual. When a person purifies their garments, they are reminded to purify their hearts; when they cleanse their bodies, they are reminded to cleanse their souls.
A Call to the Reader:
Dear believer, this divine command is a gift of mercy. It invites you to a life of purity and excellence. Imagine standing before your Lord with a heart as clean as your finest garment—free from grudges, free from sins, and radiant with faith. This is the state Allah desires for you, for He loves those who purify themselves. Begin today by cleansing your outward appearance, and let that inspire you to purify your inner world. Seek forgiveness for your sins, adorn yourself with good character, and let every act of cleanliness be a step toward spiritual elevation. The path to Allah is paved with purity, and every step you take on it brings you closer to His eternal pleasure and Paradise.
