Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Awlā (أَوْلَىٰ): This is a word of threat and warning, meaning "closer to destruction" or "more deserving of ruin." It signifies that calamity, punishment, or destruction is near and imminent for the person addressed.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse is a severe and emphatic threat from Allah to the disbeliever who rejects the truth. After describing the arrogant attitude of the one who neither believed in the Messenger nor the Qur'an, nor performed the obligatory prayers, but instead denied the revelation and walked away proudly to his family, Allah addresses him directly: "Destruction is closer to you, and then closer still!"

The repetition of the phrase — "Awlā laka fa-awlā" — intensifies the warning. It means: Woe to you! Ruin is approaching you, and then ruin will overtake you again. It is as if Allah is saying: You think you are safe in your arrogance, but calamity is right at your doorstep, and then another calamity after that. Some scholars have explained it as: "May Allah bring upon you what you dislike," and others say it means: "You deserve destruction, so destruction will come to you."

This is not a mere curse but a divine declaration of what awaits the one who turns away from guidance. The threat is certain, and the punishment is inevitable for those who persist in disbelief and arrogance.

Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, this verse carries a profound lesson for every soul. It shows us that arrogance and turning away from Allah's message never ends well. The one who walks proudly, thinking he is above the truth, is actually walking straight toward his own ruin. But Allah, in His infinite mercy, does not leave us without warning. He sends these reminders so that we may pause, reflect, and return to Him before it is too late.

The door of repentance is always open. No matter how far you have strayed, Allah's mercy is greater than your sins. Do not be like the one who hears the warning yet continues in heedlessness. Instead, be among those who respond to their Lord with humility and submission, for they are the ones who will find peace in this life and success in the Hereafter. The Qur'an is not a book of threats alone; it is a book of guidance, mercy, and hope. Embrace it, and you will find a light that illuminates your path to eternal happiness.
