Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Awlā (أَوْلَىٰ): This is a term of supplication and threat, meaning "Woe to you" or "Destruction upon you." It conveys the sense of impending ruin and calamity.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse is a powerful and emphatic declaration of warning and punishment directed at the disbeliever who rejects the truth. It comes as a direct continuation of the previous verses, which describe the arrogant attitude of those who refuse to believe in the Messenger (peace be upon him) and the Qur'an, who do not perform the obligatory prayers, and who walk away from the truth with pride and self-importance, striding toward their families in a state of haughty vanity.

The repetition of the phrase — "Woe to you, and woe! Then woe to you, and woe!" — is not mere redundancy; it is a deliberate and profound emphasis. This repetition serves multiple purposes:

  1. It confirms the certainty of the punishment: Just as a parent or a compassionate advisor might repeat a warning to a stubborn child to ensure it sinks in, Allah repeats this threat to emphasize that the destruction of such a person is absolutely inevitable and inescapable.
  2. It signifies successive stages of punishment: Some scholars have explained that the first "woe" refers to the destruction and humiliation in this worldly life, the second to the punishment in the grave and the Barzakh (the intermediate state), the third to the horrors of the Day of Resurrection, and the fourth to the eternal torment in the Hellfire. Each repetition unveils a new layer of the calamity that awaits.
  3. It reflects the severity of the crime: The more heinous the sin — such as outright denial of the truth, arrogance, and turning away from guidance — the more emphatic the warning must be. This repetition is a mirror of the gravity of the transgression.

A Call to Reflection and Repentance:

Dear reader, let this verse serve as a wake-up call for every soul that has been negligent or arrogant. Allah, in His infinite mercy, does not send such warnings to destroy us, but to save us. He is telling us: "Stop! Reflect! Turn back before it is too late." The door of repentance is open until the moment of death, and His mercy encompasses all things. Do not be like the one who walks away from the truth with pride, for pride is the very trait that caused Satan to be expelled from Paradise.

Instead, be among those who humble themselves before their Lord, who listen to the Qur'an with an open heart, and who hasten to perform their prayers. For every warning in the Qur'an is paired with an invitation to salvation. The same Allah who threatens the arrogant with "woe" welcomes the repentant with open arms, saying: *"Say, O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins."* (Az-Zumar 39:53).

So, let this verse be a turning point — a moment of sincere reflection. Do not wait for the "woe" to become a reality. Embrace faith, perform your duties, and walk with humility, for the Hereafter is the true life, and its bliss is eternal.
