Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- يَتَمَطَّى (Yatamatta): To walk with a proud, strutting gait; to stretch oneself and swagger out of arrogance and self-conceit. It originates from the idea of stretching the body (تَمَطَّطَ) while walking to show off.
Tafsir (Interpretation):
After describing the disbeliever’s rejection of the Messenger and the Qur’an, and his refusal to perform the obligatory prayers, this verse paints a vivid picture of his arrogant attitude. Having turned away from the truth in pride, he then goes back to his family, walking with a swaggering, boastful stride—his chest puffed out, his steps heavy with self-importance. This is not merely a description of his physical walk; it is a reflection of his inner state. He is so filled with arrogance and vanity that even his gait displays his disdain for the divine message he has just rejected. He carries himself as though he has achieved something great, when in reality he has only sealed his own ruin.
This portrayal serves as a powerful reminder of how arrogance blinds a person to the truth and leads them to mock the very guidance that could save them. The Qur’an exposes this behavior not to mock, but to warn: such pride is a precursor to a humiliating end. The disbeliever thinks he is mighty in his swagger, but in the sight of Allah, he is utterly weak and doomed.
A Da’wah Reflection:
Dear reader, look at your own walk through life—not just with your feet, but with your heart. Do you walk toward your family and your daily affairs with humility and gratitude, or do you carry yourself with pride, feeling superior because of your wealth, status, or opinions? This verse invites you to pause and ask: What is the source of my confidence? If it is not grounded in faith and submission to Allah, then it is nothing but a fragile illusion. The believer’s walk is one of modesty and balance, as Allah describes His righteous servants: “And the servants of the Most Merciful are those who walk upon the earth easily” (Al-Furqan: 63). Choose the path of humility, for it leads to honor in this life and the next, while arrogance only leads to loss. Let this verse be a mirror for your soul—and if you see even a trace of this swagger in yourself, hasten to correct it before you meet your Lord, for He knows the secrets of every heart and the stride of every foot.
