Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- ثُمَّ (Thumma): Then, indicating sequence and continuation.
- نُتْبِعُهُمُ (Nutbi'uhum): We make the later ones follow them, i.e., We cause them to be joined by others in the same fate.
- الْآخِرِينَ (Al-Akhireen): The later ones, those who come after in time, referring to subsequent generations of disbelievers.
Explanation of the Verse:
After mentioning the destruction of the earlier nations—like the people of Nuh (Noah), 'Ad, and Thamud—who rejected their messengers, Allah declares that He will make the later generations follow the same path of destruction. These later ones are those who persist in disbelief and stubbornness, just like their predecessors. The verse specifically points to the disbelievers of Makkah, who were addressed by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and yet continued in their denial. Just as the earlier nations were destroyed for their arrogance and rejection of truth, so too will these later ones face a similar end—unless they repent and believe. This is a stern warning that no one, regardless of time or place, is exempt from Allah's justice when they persist in falsehood.
Reflection and Call to Faith:
This verse carries a profound lesson for every generation: the laws of Allah are unchanging, and His justice is inevitable. History repeats itself for those who repeat the mistakes of the past. The Qur'an invites you to reflect on the fate of those who came before—where are the mighty empires and powerful tyrants who defied their Lord? They have perished, and their legacy is nothing but a lesson for humanity. This is a call to open your heart to the truth while there is still time. Allah, in His infinite mercy, has given you life today so that you may choose the path of guidance and salvation. Do not wait until it is too late, for the door of repentance is open now, but it will not remain open forever. Embrace faith, follow the Messenger of Allah, and you will be among those who are saved from the punishment that awaits the disbelievers. Indeed, your Lord is Forgiving and Merciful to those who turn to Him in sincerity.
