Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- كَذَٰلِكَ (Kathalika): In this manner, just like that — referring to the destruction mentioned in the preceding verses.
- نَفْعَلُ (Naf‘al): We do, We act, We deal.
- بِالْمُجْرِمِينَ (bil-Mujrimin): With the criminals — those who persist in sin, disbelief, and denial of the truth.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse comes as a powerful and solemn confirmation following the earlier verses in which Allah mentions the destruction of the ancient nations who rejected their messengers — such as the people of Noah, ‘Ad, and Thamud. After recounting how those peoples were utterly destroyed for their stubborn denial and transgression, Allah declares: "Thus do We deal with the criminals."
The meaning is clear and direct: just as We destroyed those who came before and rejected the truth, in exactly the same manner, We will deal with every criminal who persists in disbelief and wrongdoing — including the disbelievers of Makkah who rejected the message of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The punishment is not limited to past nations; it is a divine law that applies to all who commit the crime of denying Allah’s messengers and persisting in sin.
This verse serves as both a warning and a reassurance. It warns the wrongdoers that no one escapes Allah’s justice, no matter how powerful or secure they may feel in this world. The same fate that befell the mighty nations of old — who had greater strength, wealth, and numbers than the disbelievers of Makkah — will inevitably befall every generation that follows in their footsteps of arrogance and denial.
At the same time, it reassures the believers that Allah’s justice is certain. The criminals may seem to prosper for a while, but their end is already decreed. The wheels of divine justice never stop turning, and no crime goes unpunished.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, let this verse awaken your heart. Allah’s promise is true, and His justice is perfect. The history of past nations is not merely a story — it is a living lesson for all who reflect. If you find yourself drifting toward sin or doubting the consequences of your actions, remember: the same hand that destroyed the tyrants of old is fully capable of dealing with every wrongdoer today. But equally, the same mercy that saved the believers of those nations is open to you right now. Return to your Lord before the inevitable comes, and be among those who are saved, not among those who are destroyed.
