Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Aḥyā’an (أَحْيَاءً): Living beings — those who are alive, dwelling and moving upon the earth.
- Amwātan (وَأَمْوَاتًا): Dead ones — those who have passed away and are buried within the earth.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, Allah reminds us of His immense power and grace by pointing to the earth He has made for us. He asks: "Have We not made the earth a container and a resting place that holds both the living and the dead?" Indeed, the earth carries the living upon its surface — people, animals, and all creatures that inhabit it, moving about, building, and thriving. At the same time, it embraces the dead within its depths — those who have departed from this world are laid to rest in its soil, returning to the earth from which they were created. This is a profound sign of Allah’s wisdom: the same earth that sustains life also receives death, and in this cycle lies a reminder of the Hereafter. The living are given time to act, to worship, and to prepare for what comes after; the dead are held in trust until the Day of Resurrection, when Allah will raise them anew. This verse invites us to reflect on our own journey — we are currently among the living, but we will inevitably join the dead. Let this awareness awaken in our hearts a sincere desire to use our time on this earth for what pleases Allah, for the earth is not our final home; it is merely a station on the way to eternity.
A Da’wah Reflection:
Dear reader, pause and look around you. The very ground you stand on is a living witness to Allah’s mercy and power. It shelters you today, and one day it will shelter your body as well. But your soul — that is what truly matters. The earth’s embrace of the dead is not an end; it is a passage to a greater meeting with your Lord. So, while you are among the living, let this verse stir you to gratitude and action. Thank Allah for the earth that carries you, and prepare for the moment when it will carry you no more. Turn to your Creator with a sincere heart, for He who made the earth a cradle for the living and a resting place for the dead is surely capable of bringing you back to life for the final account. Do not let this life deceive you — it is but a fleeting shadow, while the Hereafter is the eternal reality. Embrace Islam’s beautiful call: live with purpose, die with hope, and meet your Lord with a heart full of faith.
