Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Kifātan (كِفَاتًا): Derived from the root *kafata* (كَفَتَ), meaning "to gather," "to hold," or "to contain." It refers to something that serves as a vessel, receptacle, or covering that draws things together and keeps them within. In this context, it means the earth is a "container" or "gatherer" that holds all of creation.
Explanation of the Verse:
Allah, in His infinite wisdom and mercy, poses a rhetorical question to humanity: "Did We not make the earth a container and gatherer?" This is not a question of uncertainty, but a powerful reminder that invites reflection. The earth, which you walk upon, till, and build upon, is not merely a random mass of soil and rock—it is a perfectly designed vessel that serves a profound purpose.
The earth is a *kifāt*—a great receptacle that holds both the living and the dead. On its surface, it carries countless living beings: humans, animals, plants, and all that breathes and moves. It provides them with a stable home, a place to live, work, worship, and thrive. Beneath its surface, it embraces the dead, sheltering them in their graves, concealing them from sight, and preserving them until the Day of Resurrection. Thus, the earth is both a cradle for life and a resting place for death—a complete system of care and order.
This verse calls upon you to ponder: Who but the All-Powerful Creator could shape this earth to be so perfectly suited for your existence? It is He who made it a stable abode, and as the verse continues in the following verses, He placed firm mountains upon it to prevent it from shaking with you, and He provided you with fresh, sweet water to drink. Every detail of this earth’s design points to a Wise and Merciful Lord who has prepared everything for your benefit.
A Call to Reflection and Gratitude:
Dear reader, when you stand upon this earth, remember that it is not an accident—it is a gift. It is a sign of Allah’s love and care for you. He did not create you and leave you neglected; rather, He made the very ground beneath your feet a witness to His power and a vessel of His mercy. The earth that carries you today will one day hold you in your grave, and from it you will be raised on the Day of Judgment. So let this verse awaken your heart: if Allah has perfected the earth for your worldly life, then surely He has also perfected the path to your eternal success. Turn to Him, thank Him, and live upon this earth as one who knows that every blessing comes from Him alone. Indeed, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest.
