Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- تَرْمِي: It throws or hurls forth with great force.
- بِشَرَرٍ: Sparks or fragments of fire that fly off.
- كَالْقَصْرِ: Like a great fortress or towering palace — a massive, lofty structure.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse paints a terrifying and awe-inspiring picture of Hellfire, addressing the disbelievers who rejected the truth in this worldly life. On the Day of Judgment, they will be told to proceed toward the very punishment they once mocked and denied. As they are driven toward it, they will seek shade from its scorching heat, but the only "shade" available will be the thick, black smoke of Hell, rising in three columns — a shade that offers no relief from the blazing heat and provides no protection against the flames.
Then comes the vivid description in this verse: "Indeed, it (Hellfire) throws sparks as huge as a fortress." The fire of Hell does not merely burn — it violently hurls enormous sparks, each one as massive and towering as a great castle or palace. Imagine a spark of fire the size of a colossal building, flying through the air with intense heat and power. This is not a small ember or a fleeting flame; these are gigantic projectiles of fire, so immense that they resemble fortified structures in their size and height.
Some scholars have further described these sparks as resembling black camels tinged with yellow — a striking image of massive, dark, and blazing objects hurtling through the atmosphere of Hell. This description serves to magnify the horror of the punishment, making it clear that no human mind can fully grasp the severity of what awaits those who persist in disbelief and sin.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, let this verse awaken your heart. The One who created this universe and revealed this truth is the Most Merciful, yet He is also the Most Just. He does not wish for any of His servants to perish; rather, He sent messengers, revealed scriptures, and gave countless opportunities for repentance. This vivid description of Hell is not meant to frighten you into despair, but to guide you toward salvation. If you have erred, know that the door of repentance is wide open — Allah accepts those who turn back to Him sincerely. Let the fear of this reality motivate you to draw closer to your Lord, to pray, to give charity, and to live a life of righteousness. Paradise, with its rivers of milk and honey, its gardens of everlasting bliss, and the vision of your Lord, is far greater and more enduring than any fleeting pleasure of this world. Choose wisely, for the choice you make today determines your eternal tomorrow.
