Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Jimalatun (جِمَالَتٌ): The plural of *jamal* (جمل), meaning camels. It denotes a large herd of camels.
- Sufrun (صُفْرٌ): The plural of *asfar* (أصفر), meaning yellow. In this context, it refers to black camels that have a yellowish tint mixed into their darkness — a description the Arabs used for very dark camels.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse paints a vivid and terrifying picture of the Day of Judgment, describing the sparks and embers that Hellfire hurls forth. Allah says: *"As if they were yellow camels."*
The imagery here is striking: the massive, blazing sparks that shoot out from the Hellfire are compared to herds of huge, dark camels that lean toward a yellowish-black hue. In the Arabian desert, camels were the largest creatures people knew — massive in size, towering in height, and overwhelming in number. By comparing the sparks of Hellfire to such camels, Allah conveys their immense size, their terrifying darkness mixed with the yellowness of fire, and their sheer abundance — as if an entire herd of colossal beasts is charging forth.
This description follows the earlier verse where the disbelievers are told to "move on to the shadow of three columns" — a shadow that provides no coolness and no protection from the flames. The sparks of Hellfire are so enormous that each one resembles a great fortified castle in size and height, and here they are likened to dark yellow camels, emphasizing their monstrous scale and the horror they inspire.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on this powerful imagery. Allah, the Most Merciful, is warning us not to frighten us aimlessly, but to guide us back to Him. If the very sparks of Hellfire are this immense and terrifying, how great must be the Fire itself? And yet, the same Allah who created this Fire also opened the doors of His mercy wide — wider than the heavens and the earth. He sent His final Messenger ﷺ with the Qur'an, a book that guides us away from this fate with every single verse.
This verse is a call to wake up, to take the warnings seriously, and to turn to Allah in repentance before that Day arrives — a Day when no amount of regret will help. The Prophet ﷺ said: "The Fire complained to its Lord, saying: 'O Lord, my parts consume each other.' So He allowed it two breaths: one in winter and one in summer. The breath in winter is the severe cold, and the breath in summer is the severe heat." (Bukhari and Muslim).
So let this verse be a reminder that the Hereafter is real, that Hellfire is real, and that Allah's mercy is real — and it is within your reach right now. Seek His forgiveness, follow His guidance, and you will be among those who are saved from this terrifying scene. Allah says: *"Say: O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful."* (Az-Zumar 39:53). The door of repentance is open — do not wait until it is too late.
