Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

(Zaleel): Shade that is cool, pleasant, and provides comfort and protection.
(Yughnee): To avail, benefit, or protect against something.
(Al-Lahab): The fierce, blazing flame and intense heat of the Fire.

Explanation of the Verse:

On the Day of Judgment, when the disbelievers are told to proceed toward the Hellfire they once denied, they will desperately seek any form of refuge or relief. They will see the smoke of Hell rising in three massive columns and rush toward it, hoping to find some shade from the unbearable heat of that Day. But this verse shatters that hope entirely: that shade is not a true shade — it provides no coolness, no comfort, and no protection. It is merely a thick, suffocating smoke that offers nothing but despair.

Moreover, this false shade does not shield them in the least from the blazing flames and scorching heat of the Fire. The intense fire of Hell penetrates through everything, and no barrier — not even smoke — can block its searing torment. The disbelievers will find themselves trapped between the crushing heat of the flames and the choking, burning smoke above them — a punishment that offers no escape and no relief whatsoever.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, contemplate the severity of this scene. The very thing the disbelievers run toward for safety becomes a source of their agony. How different is the shade of Paradise! The believers will be granted a shade that is truly cool, gentle, and blissful — a shade that brings peace to the heart and comfort to the soul, as described in the Qur'an: "They and their spouses will be in pleasant shade, reclining on adorned couches" (Ya-Sin 36:56).

This contrast invites you to reflect: which shade do you seek? The fleeting, deceptive shade of this worldly life that vanishes with the blink of an eye, or the eternal, blessed shade of Allah's mercy in the Hereafter? The choice is yours, and the time to choose is now — before that Day arrives when no shade will avail except the shade of Allah, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) mentioned among the seven categories of people whom Allah will shelter under His shade on the Day when there is no shade but His.

Turn to your Lord with a sincere heart, seek His forgiveness, and strive for His pleasure. For He is the Most Merciful, the Oft-Forgiving, and He opens His doors of repentance to all who call upon Him — before the doors are closed and the reality of that Day becomes undeniable.

📜 Verse 29-33 — Al-Mursalat

[They will be told], "Proceed to that which you used to deny.
Proceed to a shadow [of smoke] having three columns
[But having] no cool shade and availing not against the flame."
Indeed, it throws sparks [as huge] as a fortress,
As if they were yellowish [black] camels.
