Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Nakāl (نَكَالَ): A punishment that serves as a deterrent and a severe lesson for others, striking fear into those who witness or hear of it.
  • Al-Ākhirah (الْآخِرَةِ): The Hereafter — the eternal life after death.
  • Al-Ūlā (الْأُولَىٰ): The first — meaning this worldly life, the first abode of trial.

Tafsir (Explanation):

After Pharaoh gathered his people and proclaimed, "I am your lord, the Most High," arrogantly claiming divinity and rejecting the call of Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him), Allah seized him with a punishment that became an everlasting lesson. Allah took him to task for both his first and last transgression — for his initial rebellion and his final, defiant claim to divinity. In this worldly life, Allah drowned him in the sea, humiliating him before his own army and stripping him of all his power and glory. In the Hereafter, he faces the severest torment of the Fire, where his punishment is multiplied and never ends. Thus, Allah made him a sign and a warning for all tyrants and oppressors who follow in his footsteps, showing that no matter how great their power or wealth, they cannot escape the justice of their Creator.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, ponder this profound truth: Pharaoh possessed unmatched power, vast treasures, and an entire nation at his command — yet none of it availed him when Allah's decree arrived. In a single moment, his grandeur was reduced to a lifeless body swallowed by the waves. This is the fate of every soul that dares to defy its Lord. But the beauty of Islam is that Allah's mercy is open to all who turn back to Him before it is too late. Pharaoh's mistake was not merely his sin, but his insistence on arrogance until the very moment of death. Do not let pride or worldly distractions keep you from your Creator. The door of repentance is wide open — come to Allah today, and He will forgive you, protect you, and grant you a life of peace in this world and eternal bliss in the next. Let Pharaoh's end be your lesson, and let Allah's mercy be your hope.
