Word Meanings:

  • ʿibrah (عِبْرَة): A lesson, admonition, or moral example that moves a person from heedlessness to reflection and from error to guidance.
  • yakhshā (يَخْشَىٰ): One who fears Allah, stands in awe of Him, and is mindful of His punishment and accountability.

Explanation of the Verse:

After recounting the story of Pharaoh — how he gathered his people and proclaimed, "I am your lord, the most high," and how Allah seized him with punishment in this world and the next — Allah concludes with this profound statement: "Indeed, in that is a lesson for whoever fears [Allah]."

This verse points directly to the fate of Pharaoh as a timeless sign. He was not merely a historical tyrant; he was a man who had absolute power, wealth, and dominion, yet when he transgressed against Allah’s commands and oppressed His servants, Allah destroyed him utterly — drowning him in the sea while preserving his body as a sign for later generations. His end was a double punishment: humiliation in this life and torment in the Hereafter.

The phrase "for whoever fears" is significant. The lesson of Pharaoh’s destruction is not for everyone equally — it is for the one whose heart is alive, who possesses taqwā (God-consciousness), and who understands that no power, no matter how great, can protect a person from Allah’s justice. Such a person looks at Pharaoh’s end and immediately asks: "If this happened to a king of such might, what about me?" This reflection drives them to repentance, humility, and obedience.

The lesson is comprehensive: it teaches that arrogance leads to ruin, that transgression against Allah’s boundaries is never left unpunished, and that the mighty are brought low while the humble are raised. It also teaches that Allah’s justice is perfect — no oppressor escapes, and no victim is forgotten.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, this verse is not merely history — it is a mirror for every soul. Look at the world around you: do you see those who oppress, who claim power, who mock the truth? Their end is already written in the story of Pharaoh. Allah does not change His way with the arrogant. But He also opens the door of repentance for those who fear Him and turn back to Him before it is too late.

Let this verse awaken your heart. If you fear Allah, you are the one addressed by this lesson — and you are the one who will be saved from the fate of the tyrants. The Qur’an is not a book of stories; it is a book of guidance, and every story within it is a signpost pointing you toward success in this life and salvation in the next. So be among those who fear, reflect, and act — for the lesson is here, and the door of mercy is still open.
