Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Dahāhā (دَحَاهَا): This means He spread it out, flattened it, and made it suitable for habitation. It conveys the idea of expanding the earth and preparing it for life, like spreading a carpet.

Tafsir (Interpretation):

After mentioning the creation of the heavens, Allah turns our attention to the earth, saying: *"And the earth, after that, He spread it out."* This means that after Allah created the sky—raising it high as a solid structure, perfecting its form, darkening its night and bringing forth its morning—He then spread out the earth beneath it. He made it a vast, stable expanse, suitable for dwelling, and placed within it all that humanity and animals need to survive. He caused water springs to gush forth, brought out vegetation for grazing, and anchored the mountains as firm pegs to stabilize the ground. All of this was done with perfect wisdom and mercy, as a provision for you and your cattle.

The sequence here—mentioning the heavens first and then the earth—does not imply that the earth was created after the sky in time, but rather that the spreading and preparation of the earth for life came after the creation of the heavens. The earth itself was created before the sky, as other verses indicate, but its expansion and the extraction of its benefits took place afterward. This is a profound reminder of Allah's absolute power: the One who created the vast heavens and spread the earth with all its resources is certainly capable of resurrecting you after death. In fact, bringing you back to life is far easier for Him than the original creation of all these wonders—and for Him, everything is easy and effortless.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, pause and reflect on this magnificent verse. The earth beneath your feet—the very ground you walk on, build upon, and cultivate—was deliberately spread out for you by your Lord. He did not create it in vain; He prepared it as a home, stocked with water, vegetation, and stability. This is not random chance—it is the loving care of a Creator who knows your needs before you even ask. When you see the mountains standing firm, the springs flowing, and the pastures greening, know that this is a sign of His mercy and a proof of His power. If He could do all this with a single command, then His promise of resurrection and the Hereafter is absolutely true. So let your heart find peace in His power, and let your life be a response of gratitude to the One who spread the earth for you—and who will one day raise you from it.
