Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Fitnah (فِتْنَةٌ): A trial, test, or tribulation — something that tests a person's faith and patience, and may lead them into sin if they fail the test.
- Ajrun 'Azeem (أَجْرٌ عَظِيمٌ): A magnificent and immense reward — referring to the eternal bliss of Paradise and Allah's pleasure.
Tafsir (Explanation):
O believers, Allah calls upon you to know with certainty that your wealth and your children are not merely blessings to be enjoyed — they are a profound test and trial from your Lord. Your wealth is a trust that Allah has placed in your hands, and your children are gifts He has bestowed upon you. Through them, Allah examines whether you will remain grateful, obedient, and mindful of Him — or whether you will become so absorbed in them that you neglect your duties toward Him.
Indeed, wealth and children can become a distraction that turns you away from the Hereafter. They may push you toward greed, dishonesty, and even betrayal — as some of the companions experienced when they were tempted by worldly gains during the Battle of Badr. A person may love his money so much that he withholds what Allah has commanded him to give, or he may love his children so deeply that he compromises his religion for their sake. This is the nature of the trial: will you prioritize the temporary over the eternal?
But know with certainty that with Allah is a reward far greater than anything this world can offer. His reward is immense, everlasting, and beyond measure — reserved for those who place His pleasure above all else, who prefer obedience to Him over the allure of wealth and family. So do not let the love of worldly things deprive you of this magnificent prize. Hold fast to your faith, fulfill your obligations, and remember that everything you have is but a means — not an end. The true end is Allah, and His reward is the ultimate success.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear believer, ponder this profound truth: your wealth and children are not your enemies — they are your test. The very things you cherish most in this life are the scales by which your sincerity is weighed. How beautiful is the promise of Allah! He does not ask you to abandon your wealth or neglect your children, but He calls you to keep them in their proper place — beneath your obedience to Him, not above it. When you pass this test, you will find that Allah's reward surpasses every joy this world could ever offer. So strive, with a heart full of hope and trust, to be among those who choose Allah over everything else — for He is the Most Generous, and His reward is truly magnificent.
