Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Subh (الصبح): The dawn, the early morning when light begins to spread across the horizon.
- Tanaffasa (تَنَفَّس): Literally "breathed" — here it means the light of dawn expands and spreads, just as a person breathes out and the breath expands outward. It is a beautiful metaphor for the gradual emergence and diffusion of morning light.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, Allah Almighty takes an oath by the dawn when its light breathes forth and spreads. The imagery is profound: just as a living being draws breath and exhales, the morning light "breathes" — it emerges gently, then expands, filling the sky with radiance and dispelling the darkness of night. This is a moment of transition, of hope, of renewal. The dawn is not a sudden explosion but a gradual, merciful unfolding of light, and Allah swears by this magnificent phenomenon to draw attention to the truth that follows in the coming verses.
The oath by the dawn carries deep significance. The dawn is the time when darkness recedes and light prevails — a sign of Allah's power over creation, His ability to bring life after death, and His mercy in granting a new day to His servants. It is also the time of the Fajr prayer, a blessed hour when the faithful rise to worship their Lord, seeking His forgiveness and guidance. The "breathing" of the dawn symbolizes the vitality and life that Allah pours into His creation each morning, reminding us that He is the One who revives the earth after its death and will revive us on the Day of Resurrection.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, have you ever stood at dawn and watched the sky transform? That gentle light creeping over the horizon is not a random accident — it is the breath of your Creator, a sign of His mercy and His power. Every single morning, Allah renews His creation and gives you a fresh opportunity to turn to Him, to seek His pleasure, and to live a life of purpose. The dawn is a promise: after every darkness, there is light; after every hardship, there is ease; after every night of ignorance, there is the guidance of the Qur'an. Let the beauty of the dawn remind you of the beauty of faith, and let it inspire you to begin each day with the remembrance of Allah, for He is the One who brings light into hearts just as He brings light into the sky. Embrace this light, and let it guide your steps toward Him.
