Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Fī ahlihi: Among his family and people.
- Masrūran: Delighted, rejoicing, living a life of pleasure and heedlessness.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse describes the state of the wicked person who is given his record of deeds from behind his back on the Day of Judgment — and that is the disbeliever. He will call for destruction and utter ruin, and he will enter the Fire, suffering its intense heat. The reason for this terrible end is then revealed: "Indeed, he was among his family, rejoicing."
In the worldly life, this person lived among his family and close ones in a state of joy and self-satisfaction. He was pleased with himself, delighting in his wealth, his status, and his desires. He followed his whims and indulged in his lusts without any restraint, feeling proud and arrogant. His joy was not a simple, innocent happiness — rather, it was the joy of one who has turned away from Allah, who feels secure in his worldly pleasures, and who never lets the thought of the Hereafter cross his mind. He was so immersed in his fleeting enjoyments that he forgot his true purpose, forgot his Creator, and forgot that he would one day stand before Allah for judgment.
This brief phrase paints a vivid picture: a person so engrossed in the comforts of home, family, and worldly delights that he becomes blind to the reality of the afterlife. His laughter and pleasure in this world were not accompanied by gratitude to Allah, nor by reflection on the consequences of his deeds. Instead, his joy was built upon disobedience and heedlessness — and that is precisely what led him to that dreadful moment when he receives his book from behind his back.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, pause and look at your own life. How do you find joy? Is your happiness tied to obedience to Allah, or is it the fleeting pleasure of following desires? The believer's joy is different — it is a joy mixed with gratitude, a happiness that remembers Allah in every moment, and a delight that does not forget the Hereafter. The Qur'an teaches us that true success is not found in unchecked pleasure, but in a life lived with awareness of Allah, with repentance for our sins, and with hope in His mercy.
Do not let the temporary comforts of this world deceive you, as they deceived those who came before. Every breath you take is a gift from Allah, and every moment of joy is an opportunity to thank Him. The one who lives heedlessly, rejoicing in sin, will one day face the consequences — but the one who lives with faith, balancing joy with gratitude and pleasure with obedience, will find everlasting happiness in the presence of his Lord.
So let this verse be a gentle warning and a loving invitation: turn back to Allah before it is too late, and make your joy in this world a joy that is pleasing to your Creator — for that is the joy that will never turn into sorrow.
