Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- ʿĀd — The ancient tribe of ʿĀd, descendants of ʿĀd ibn Iram ibn ʿAws ibn Sām ibn Nūḥ. They were a powerful people known for their immense physical strength and towering stature.
- "Have you not seen" (alam tara) — This is a rhetorical question meant to draw attention and provoke thought, not a literal inquiry. It means: "Have you not considered, learned, or been informed?"
Tafsir (Explanation):
Allah addresses His Messenger ﷺ — and through him, all of humanity — with a profound rhetorical question: *"Have you not seen how your Lord dealt with ʿĀd?"* This is not a question of ignorance, but a call to reflect deeply on the fate of those who came before.
The people of ʿĀd were the descendants of ʿĀd ibn Iram, a mighty tribe that lived in the southern Arabian Peninsula, in the region of Al-Aḥqāf (the sandy dunes). They were blessed with extraordinary physical prowess — towering bodies, immense strength, and remarkable architectural skills. They built magnificent structures with lofty pillars and high columns, monuments of stone that had no equal anywhere on earth at that time. Their civilization was a marvel of human achievement, and they took great pride in their power and accomplishments.
Yet, despite all these blessings, they rejected the message of their Prophet Hūd (peace be upon him), who called them to worship Allah alone and abandon their arrogance and idolatry. They mocked him, denied his call, and persisted in their transgression. They believed their strength and resources would protect them forever — but nothing could protect them from the decree of their Creator.
So Allah destroyed them utterly. He sent upon them a furious, devastating wind that raged for seven nights and eight days, annihilating them completely — leaving their mighty structures in ruins and their bodies scattered like hollow palm tree trunks. Their power, their buildings, their pride — all became a lesson for those who would reflect.
This verse serves as a powerful warning to the Quraysh of Makkah, who were also proud of their status, wealth, and heritage. Allah is saying: *Look at what happened to those who were even stronger and more advanced than you. Do not let your worldly blessings make you forget your Lord, for His punishment is severe.*
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, this verse invites you to open your eyes and heart. The story of ʿĀd is not just ancient history — it is a living lesson. How many nations today boast of their technology, their armies, their skyscrapers, and their economies? How many people feel invincible because of their wealth or status? Yet the One who gave them all of this can take it away in an instant.
The Qur’an repeatedly draws our attention to the ruins of past civilizations so that we may learn before we experience. Allah does not wish to destroy us — He wishes to guide us. He sends these reminders out of His infinite mercy, so that we might turn back to Him before it is too late.
So ask yourself: *What is my relationship with my Lord?* Do I acknowledge His blessings with gratitude and obedience, or do I live in heedlessness, relying on my own strength? The choice is yours — and the time to choose is now.
