Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Iram (إِرَمَ): The ancient tribe of 'Ad, named after their forefather Iram, who was the grandson of Prophet Nuh (Noah), peace be upon him.
- Al-'Imad (الْعِمَاد): The pillars or columns; referring to their towering buildings and structures supported by great pillars, indicating their immense strength and architectural prowess.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, Allah draws our attention to the fate of the mighty tribe of 'Ad, also known as Iram. They were a people of extraordinary physical stature and power, unmatched in their time. Their civilization was renowned for its magnificent architecture—buildings raised high upon massive pillars and columns, a testament to their engineering skills and material strength. No other people in the world at that time possessed such grandeur, might, or imposing structures. Yet, despite all their power and achievements, they were utterly destroyed when they rejected the message of their Prophet Hud, peace be upon him, and persisted in arrogance and disobedience to Allah.
A Call to Reflection:
This verse invites us to ponder the fleeting nature of worldly power and glory. The tribe of 'Ad built towering monuments and possessed unmatched strength, but none of that could protect them from the decree of Allah when they transgressed. Their pillars and palaces became ruins, and their might turned to dust. This is a powerful reminder for us today: no matter how advanced our technology, how tall our skyscrapers, or how strong our armies, true success lies only in humility before Allah and obedience to His commands. Let us not be deceived by the temporary allure of this world, but rather strive for what pleases our Lord, for His reward is everlasting and His punishment is severe. Take heed from the lessons of history, and turn to Allah in repentance and gratitude before it is too late.
