Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Nafaqāt (نفقات): Expenditures or charitable contributions given in the way of Allah.
  • Kusālā (كسالى): Lazy, sluggish, or heavy-hearted; performing an act without enthusiasm or genuine desire.
  • Kārihūn (كارهون): Those who are averse, reluctant, or doing something against their will.

Explanation of the Verse:

This noble verse reveals the profound spiritual reality that the acceptance of deeds is not merely about their outward form, but about the state of the heart and the faith that drives them. Allah, the Most High, clarifies why the charitable expenditures of the hypocrites are not accepted: the sole barrier is their disbelief in Allah and His Messenger, peace be upon him. Their hearts are sealed with rejection of the truth, and this inner corruption renders their outward acts void of any spiritual value.

Furthermore, their relationship with worship reveals their true nature. They do not come to the prayer except in a state of laziness and reluctance—dragging themselves to it only when compelled by social pressure or necessity, never out of love for Allah or hope for His reward. Similarly, they do not spend their wealth except while despising it, viewing their contributions as a loss rather than an investment in the Hereafter. Because they have no faith, they neither hope for the reward of these acts nor fear the punishment for abandoning them. Their deeds are hollow shells without a kernel of sincerity.

A Da'wah Reflection:

How beautiful and pure is the faith that transforms even the smallest act into a treasure with Allah! When the heart is alive with belief, prayer becomes a delight and spending becomes a joy—for the believer knows that every penny given in charity is a seed planted for an eternal harvest. The hypocrites, deprived of this light, find worship burdensome and charity painful. This verse invites us to examine our own hearts: do we rush to prayer with eagerness, or drag ourselves with heaviness? Do we give with open, joyful hands, or with clenched, reluctant fists? Let us strive to purify our intentions and revive our faith, so that our deeds ascend to Allah, beloved and accepted. For the key to acceptance is not in the size of the gift, but in the sincerity of the giver and the strength of their connection to Allah and His Messenger. May Allah make us among those whose hearts are alive with faith and whose deeds are adorned with sincerity.

📜 Verse 52-56 — At-Tawbah

Say, "Do you await for us except one of the two best things while we await for you that Allah will afflict you with punishment from Himself or at our hands? So wait; indeed we, along with you, are waiting."
Say, "Spend willingly or unwillingly; never will it be accepted from you. Indeed, you have been a defiantly disobedient people."
And what prevents their expenditures from being accepted from them but that they have disbelieved in Allah and in His Messenger and that they come not to prayer except while they are lazy and that they do not spend except while they are unwilling.
So let not their wealth or their children impress you. Allah only intends to punish them through them in worldly life and that their souls should depart [at death] while they are disbelievers.
And they swear by Allah that they are from among you while they are not from among you; but they are a people who are afraid.
