Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- لَا تُعْجِبْكَ — Do not let it impress you or fill you with admiration.
- لِيُعَذِّبَهُم بِهَا — So that He may punish/torment them through it (their wealth and children).
- وَتَزْهَقَ — And that it departs (i.e., the soul leaves the body at death).
Explanation of the Verse:
O Prophet, do not let the abundant wealth and numerous children of the hypocrites impress you, nor should you view them as a sign of honour or divine favour. These worldly blessings are not what they appear to be — for them, they are a source of trial and punishment, not reward.
Allah, in His perfect wisdom, intends to punish these hypocrites through their wealth and children in this very worldly life. Their wealth becomes a burden — they exhaust themselves in accumulating it, guarding it, and worrying over it, never finding true rest or contentment. Their children bring them grief, anxiety, and hardship. Every misfortune that befalls their property or their offspring becomes a torment for them, and because they do not believe, they gain no spiritual reward or consolation from these trials — unlike the believers who are purified and elevated through patience and faith.
Furthermore, their souls will depart from their bodies while they are still in a state of disbelief — they will die upon kufr (rejection of Allah and His Messenger). Thus, their ultimate end is eternal punishment in the Hereafter, and their worldly wealth and children only hastened their misery and deepened their loss.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, this verse carries a profound lesson for every soul. How often do we look at the wealthy and powerful and feel a pang of envy? How often do we measure success by possessions and progeny? Allah teaches us here that what glitters in this world may actually be a veil over destruction. The true blessing is not in having much, but in having faith that guides us, a heart that is content, and a life that ends upon submission to Allah. Do not be deceived by outward appearances — for the believer, every trial is a mercy, and every blessing is a means of gratitude. But for the one who turns away, even the sweetest of worldly joys can become a bitter poison. Let this verse awaken your heart: seek the everlasting treasure of iman (faith), for wealth and children are but a fleeting shadow, while the soul's final destination is the eternal reality. May Allah grant us the wisdom to see with the eyes of the heart and to live for what truly matters.
