Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Astaghfir lahum – Seek forgiveness for them (the hypocrites).
- Sab'ina marrah – Seventy times; a number used by the Arabs to denote the utmost limit of repetition or effort.
- Fasiqin – Those who defiantly disobey Allah's commands and persist in sin and disbelief.
Tafsir (Explanation):
O Messenger, whether you ask Allah's forgiveness for the hypocrites or refrain from doing so, it will make no difference—Allah will never forgive them, even if you were to plead for their pardon seventy times or more. The mention of "seventy" is not a restriction but an expression of the absolute maximum effort one could make; yet even that would not avail them, because their sin is not a minor slip but a fundamental rejection of faith. They disbelieved in Allah and His Messenger, and their hearts were sealed with hypocrisy and stubborn defiance. Allah, in His perfect wisdom and justice, does not guide to the path of truth those who deliberately and persistently choose to rebel against His commands and persist in their transgression.
This verse carries a profound lesson: forgiveness from Allah is not a mechanical reward for mere words or rituals, but a mercy granted to those who sincerely turn to Him in faith and repentance. The hypocrites had no such sincerity—their outward actions contradicted their inner reality, and their hearts were void of true belief. Thus, no intercession, not even from the Prophet himself (peace be upon him), could benefit them once their fate was sealed by their own choice.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, let this verse awaken your heart to the immense value of sincere faith. Allah's mercy is vast beyond measure, and His door of repentance is open to every soul that turns to Him with honesty and humility. Do not let your heart become like that of the hypocrites—hardened by pride, deception, or attachment to sin. Instead, seize this precious moment to renew your faith, purify your intentions, and draw closer to your Lord. For Allah loves those who repent and purify themselves, and He has promised to forgive all sins for those who sincerely seek His forgiveness with a truthful heart. The door is open—will you not walk through it?
