Key Words and Their Meanings:
- "تُصَلِّ عَلَى" (Tusalli 'ala): To perform the funeral prayer (Salat al-Janazah) for someone, which includes supplicating for them.
- "تَقُمْ عَلَى قَبْرِهِ" (Taqum 'ala qabrihi): To stand at his grave, i.e., to attend his burial and remain there to pray for him or to visit his grave for the purpose of seeking forgiveness for him.
- "فَاسِقُونَ" (Fasiqun): Those who have deviated from obedience to Allah, who have rebelled against His commands and persist in sin and disbelief.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this profound verse, Allah addresses His Messenger ﷺ with a clear and decisive command: never perform the funeral prayer over any of the hypocrites who die, and never stand at their graves to supplicate for them or to participate in their burial rites. This is not a mere suggestion—it is an absolute prohibition that applies to every known hypocrite, without exception, for all time.
The reason for this stern command is stated explicitly: these individuals disbelieved in Allah and His Messenger ﷺ, and they died while persisting in their rebellion and sin. Their outward profession of faith was contradicted by their inward rejection, and their lives were marked by disobedience and enmity toward the truth. To pray for such a person would be to seek mercy for someone who rejected mercy itself, and to stand at their grave would be to honor one who dishonored Allah and His Messenger.
This verse also serves as a powerful lesson for the believers: the bonds of faith take precedence over all other bonds. Even if a person is a relative, a friend, or a companion in appearance, if their heart is filled with hypocrisy and disbelief, the believer must not show them the same honor and supplication reserved for the people of faith. The Prophet ﷺ, despite his immense mercy and compassion, was commanded to withhold these rites from the hypocrites—not out of hatred, but as a manifestation of Allah's justice and as a clear sign to the community about the seriousness of hypocrisy.
After this verse was revealed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ never again prayed over a known hypocrite, nor did he stand at the grave of one, until he passed away. This was a practical application of the divine command, demonstrating that the revelation was not merely theoretical but was implemented in the life of the Prophet ﷺ.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear Muslim, reflect on the weight of this verse. Hypocrisy is a disease of the heart that leads to eternal loss. The hypocrites thought they could deceive Allah and the believers, but Allah exposed their reality and commanded His Prophet to treat them accordingly. This is a reminder for us to purify our hearts, to be sincere in our faith, and to ensure that our actions match our words. Let us not be among those who claim faith with their tongues while their hearts are far from Allah. And let us be grateful for the mercy of Allah, who has shown us the path of sincerity and truth, and who has warned us against the fate of the hypocrites. May Allah protect us all from hypocrisy and grant us steadfastness on the straight path.
