Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Iqra' (اقْرَأْ): Read, recite, or proclaim aloud.
  • Bi-ismi Rabbika (بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ): In the name of your Lord.
  • Alladhi Khalaq (الَّذِي خَلَقَ): The One Who created — a description of Allah that emphasizes His exclusive power of creation, a quality no idol or false deity shares.

Explanation of the Verse:

This is the very first verse ever revealed from the Qur'an, and it marks the beginning of the prophetic mission of Muhammad (peace be upon him). In this verse, Allah commands His Prophet to read and recite the Qur'an, beginning with the name of his Lord — the One Who alone created all of existence. The command to "read" here is not merely about literacy; it is a call to seek knowledge, to reflect, and to proclaim the message of truth. The verse emphasizes that all creation — every human being, every living thing, and the entire universe — is the work of this single, unique Creator. By attributing creation solely to Allah, the verse also corrects the false belief of the polytheists who called their idols "lords" (arbab); for none of those idols created anything, and thus they deserve no worship.

The verse carries a profound lesson for every believer: every act of reading, learning, and worship should begin with the name of Allah, acknowledging Him as the source of all knowledge and existence. It is a reminder that true success lies in connecting our every endeavor to our Creator, who brought us from nothingness into being.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, ponder the greatness of this first command: "Read!" It was revealed to an unlettered Prophet in a cave, yet it ignited a revolution of knowledge that transformed the world. This verse invites you to open your heart to the Qur'an, to read it with sincerity, and to begin every good action with the name of Allah. When you acknowledge that your Lord is the Creator of all, your heart fills with humility, gratitude, and love for Him. Let this verse be a starting point for you — a call to draw closer to your Creator, to seek beneficial knowledge, and to live a life guided by His light. Indeed, the One who created you is the most deserving of your worship, your obedience, and your love. So, begin today: read, reflect, and let the name of your Lord be the key to your heart's peace and your soul's salvation.
