Word Meanings:

  • أَوْ (aw): Or – used here to present an alternative scenario.
  • أَمَرَ (amara): Commanded, ordered, or enjoined.
  • بِالتَّقْوَى (bil-taqwa): With piety, God-consciousness, or the fear of Allah that leads one to fulfill His commands and avoid His prohibitions.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse continues the rhetorical questioning that began in the preceding verses, addressing the arrogance of a specific man (Abu Jahl) who dared to forbid a servant of Allah—Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)—from praying to his Lord. The verse poses a powerful, thought-provoking question: What if this man who is being forbidden from prayer is himself upon true guidance, and what if he is actively commanding others to be mindful of Allah and to live righteously? Would it be reasonable or just to prevent such a person from worshipping his Creator?

The verse highlights a profound contradiction in the attitude of the oppressor. If the one being obstructed is a man of guidance who calls others to piety, then the act of forbidding him is not merely an attack on one person—it is an assault on truth, righteousness, and the very message of God. The question is meant to awaken the conscience of the listener and expose the absurdity of Abu Jahl's hostility. How could anyone, in sound mind, stand against a person whose very mission is to guide humanity toward goodness and God-consciousness?

This verse also serves as a gentle yet firm reminder to the believer: the path of guidance and the call to taqwa (piety) are so noble that no opposition, no matter how fierce, can diminish their value. The one who commands righteousness is honored in the sight of Allah, even if the world turns against him. And for the reader today, it is a call to reflect: Are we among those who command good and forbid evil? Are we standing with the guided ones, or are we unknowingly aligning with those who hinder the path of truth?

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse carries a timeless lesson for every Muslim. It teaches us that the noblest deed a person can do is to call others to taqwa—to remind them of Allah, to encourage them toward obedience, and to steer them away from sin. The one who does this, even if opposed and mocked, holds a station of honor before Allah. It also reassures us that no enemy of truth can ever succeed in extinguishing the light of guidance. So, dear reader, strive to be among those who "command taqwa"—in your family, your community, and your society. Speak the truth with wisdom, and never let the hostility of others deter you from the path of righteousness. For Allah sees all, and He is the Protector of those who call to Him.
