Tafsir (Explanation):
When hardship strikes—whether at sea, on land, or in any trial of life—people instinctively turn to Allah, raising their hands in sincere supplication, promising to be grateful and obedient. But no sooner does Allah answer their prayers and deliver them safely to shore than they forget their promises and begin to transgress and spread corruption upon the earth. They oppress others, commit sins, and rebel against the commands of their Lord—all without any right or justification.
Allah addresses humanity directly with a profound truth: "O people, your transgression is only against yourselves." Your wrongdoing does not harm Allah in the least; rather, the consequences of your oppression and sin will fall back upon you. The harm you cause to others, the injustice you commit, and the corruption you spread will all be recorded against you and will weigh heavily on your own scales on the Day of Judgment.
The enjoyment you seek through your transgression is nothing but a fleeting pleasure in this temporary worldly life. It is like a traveler who stops briefly to drink from a stream, only to continue on his journey. This life, with all its allure and temptations, is but a passing shadow that will soon vanish.
Then comes the ultimate reality: "Then to Us is your return." After this short sojourn on earth, you will all return to your Creator. He will inform you of everything you used to do—every deed, every word, every intention—and He will hold you accountable for all of it. Nothing will be hidden, and no deed, however small, will be forgotten.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, reflect on this profound truth: Allah does not need our obedience, nor does our disobedience diminish His glory in any way. When we transgress, we only harm ourselves—our hearts become hardened, our souls become burdened, and our ultimate destiny is jeopardized. Yet, in His infinite mercy, Allah reminds us of this reality so that we may wake up before it is too late.
The door of repentance is always open. If you find yourself falling into transgression after Allah has saved you from a trial, know that His mercy is greater than your sins. Return to Him sincerely, and He will forgive you and guide you back to the straight path. Do not let the fleeting pleasures of this world deceive you, for the Hereafter is far better and everlasting. Let your gratitude to Allah be shown through obedience, and let your deliverance from trials be a reason to draw closer to Him, not to stray further away.
