Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- "Lam yuhītū bi-ʿilmihi" (لَمْ يُحِيطُوا بِعِلْمِهِ): They did not encompass it with their knowledge — meaning they did not fully grasp or comprehend its reality, truth, and implications.
- "Taʾwīluhu" (تَأْوِيلُهُ): Its final interpretation or the ultimate fulfillment of what it promises and warns about — such as the Day of Resurrection, reward, punishment, and the coming of divine justice.
- "ʿĀqibat al-ẓālimīn" (عَاقِبَةُ الظَّالِمِينَ): The final outcome and end of those who persist in wrongdoing and denial.
The Tafsir (Explanation):
The verse reveals a profound truth about human nature when confronted with divine guidance. Instead of pondering over the Qur'an with an open heart and a sincere mind, these people rushed to reject it at the very first hearing — before even attempting to understand its verses or reflect upon its meanings. They denied what they had not yet grasped: the realities of the Hereafter, the resurrection, Paradise and Hellfire, and the ultimate justice of Allah. And the final fulfillment of these promises — the actual coming of the punishment they were warned about — had not yet reached them.
This is not a new phenomenon. The verse draws our attention to a recurring pattern in history: the nations before them did exactly the same. They too rejected the messengers and the scriptures before truly understanding them, and they too mocked the warnings until the promised punishment descended upon them. The Qur'an then turns to the Prophet ﷺ — and to every reader — with a powerful call: *"Look and see how the end of the wrongdoers was!"* Some were swallowed into the earth, some were drowned, and others were seized by different forms of destruction. Their power, wealth, and numbers did not save them.
This is a timeless lesson for all of humanity. The invitation of the Qur'an is an invitation to reflect, to seek knowledge, and to approach the truth with humility — not with arrogance or haste. How many people today reject Islam without ever truly studying it? How many dismiss the Qur'an without reading a single verse with an open heart? The verse gently but firmly reminds us: do not be like those who denied before they understood, for the end of such people is always regret and loss. But for those who approach the Qur'an with sincerity, Allah opens their hearts to light, guidance, and a peace that nothing in this world can match. The Qur'an is not a book to be feared — it is a mercy to be embraced, a treasure to be discovered, and a guide to eternal success.
