Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Bayātan (بَيَاتًا): At night, specifically during the time when people are asleep and unaware.
  • Nahāran (نَهَارًا): During the daytime, when people are busy with their daily affairs.
  • Mādhā yastaʿjilu minhu al-mujrimūn (مَاذَا يَسْتَعْجِلُ مِنْهُ الْمُجْرِمُونَ): What is it that the criminals are so impatiently hastening from this punishment?

Explanation of the Verse:

O Prophet, say to these disbelievers who mockingly demand the punishment of Allah: "Tell me—if His punishment were to descend upon you suddenly, whether it comes upon you in the depth of the night while you are asleep and heedless, or in the broad daylight while you are occupied with your worldly pursuits and daily routines—what exactly is it that you, the criminals, are so eagerly rushing toward?"

This is a rhetorical question meant to shake them from their arrogance. It is not a genuine inquiry, but rather a stern rebuke and a warning. The meaning is: "How terrible and foolish is that which you are hastening!" For the punishment of Allah is not something to be taken lightly or to be challenged. When it arrives, whether by night or by day, it will be sudden, overwhelming, and inescapable. There is no benefit in rushing it—only regret and ruin will follow.

The verse highlights the ignorance and insolence of the criminals who, instead of fearing Allah's wrath and seeking His mercy, mockingly ask for His punishment to be hastened. They do not realize that when it comes, it will not be a spectacle for their amusement, but a devastating reality that will leave them in utter despair.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, reflect on this profound truth: the punishment of Allah is not a matter of jest or a challenge to be provoked. It is a reality that awaits those who persist in sin and reject the truth. Yet, Allah, in His infinite mercy, gives us time—night and day—to turn back to Him, to repent, and to seek His forgiveness. He does not hasten His punishment, but He also does not delay it beyond His wisdom.

Do not be like those who mock the warnings of Allah, for they will taste the bitter consequences of their arrogance. Instead, seize this moment—whether it is night or day—to draw closer to your Lord, to mend your ways, and to embrace the peace that comes with faith. The doors of repentance are open, and Allah's mercy is far greater than His wrath. Do not let the fleeting pleasures of this world blind you to the eternal reality of the Hereafter. Return to Allah before the punishment arrives, for when it does, there will be no time for regret, and no opportunity for escape.

📜 Verse 48-52 — Yunus

And they say, "When is [the fulfillment of] this promise, if you should be truthful?"
Say, "I possess not for myself any harm or benefit except what Allah should will. For every nation is a [specified] term. When their time has come, then they will not remain behind an hour, nor will they precede [it]."
Say, "Have you considered: if His punishment should come to you by night or by day - for which [aspect] of it would the criminals be impatient?"
Then is it that when it has [actually] occurred you will believe in it? Now? And you were [once] for it impatient
Then it will be said to those who had wronged, "Taste the punishment of eternity; are you being recompensed except for what you used to earn?"
