Surah Yunus — Verse 7

Word Meanings:

• لَا يَرْجُونَ لِقَاءَنَا — They do not hope for or expect the meeting with Us (on the Day of Resurrection); they do not anticipate it because they deny the Hereafter.
• رَضُوا بِالْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا — They are content with the worldly life, choosing it over the eternal life to come.
• وَاطْمَأَنُّوا بِهَا — They feel at ease and tranquil with it, as if it were their final abode, undisturbed by thoughts of what lies ahead.
• آيَاتِنَا — Our signs: the universal signs in creation (the heavens, the earth, the self) and the revealed signs (the scriptures and messengers).
• غَافِلُونَ — Heedless, neglectful, turning away without reflection or contemplation.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this verse, Allah describes a category of people whose hearts have become sealed against the truth. They are those who do not anticipate the meeting with their Lord — not because they have not heard of it, but because they deny the resurrection and the reckoning that follows. Their denial is not born of ignorance, but of a deliberate choice to turn away from the call of truth.

Instead of longing for the eternal bliss of the Hereafter, they have settled for this fleeting worldly life. They have made it their ultimate goal, their only concern, and their source of satisfaction. They feel completely at home in it, as if this world were their permanent residence and not a temporary station on a journey to something greater. Their hearts have become so attached to material pleasures, wealth, status, and desires that they find no room for the remembrance of Allah or the thought of the life to come.

Furthermore, they are heedless of Allah's signs — both the signs spread across the universe and the signs revealed in His books. They pass by the mountains, the seas, the stars, the alternation of night and day, and the wonders of their own creation without pausing to reflect. They hear the verses of the Qur'an but do not let them penetrate their hearts. They are like travelers who see the road signs but ignore them, continuing on a path that leads to destruction.

A Call to Reflection and Hope:

Dear reader, pause for a moment and ask yourself: Where is your heart resting? Is it resting in the embrace of this world, which will inevitably fade, or is it resting in the hope of meeting your Lord, which is the true and everlasting joy?

Allah does not mention these people to frighten you away from the blessings of this life. Rather, He invites you to place this life in its proper position — as a bridge, not a destination. Enjoy what Allah has made lawful, but let your heart remain connected to Him. Let the thought of meeting Him fill you with hope and motivate you to do good.

The signs of Allah are all around you, calling you to reflect. The sky above you, the earth beneath you, the breath in your lungs — all of them testify to His greatness and His mercy. Do not be among the heedless. Open your heart to these signs, and you will find that the path to Allah is not difficult — it is the most natural and fulfilling path a human being can walk.

May Allah make us among those who hope for His meeting, who are content with His decree, and who reflect upon His signs in every moment of their lives.
