Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- تَبَوَّءَا: Take and prepare for yourselves (make ready as dwellings).
- قِبْلَةً: A direction for prayer; here, it means making the homes places of worship facing the sacred direction.
- أَقِيمُوا الصَّلَاةَ: Perform the prayer perfectly and completely, observing its times and conditions.
Tafsir (Explanation):
In this noble verse, Allah recounts a moment of divine guidance and reassurance for His prophets Musa (Moses) and Harun (Aaron), peace be upon them, during a time of intense persecution under Pharaoh’s tyranny. Allah inspired them to prepare homes in Egypt for their people—the Children of Israel—not merely as shelters, but as sanctuaries of faith. They were instructed to turn these homes into places of worship, facing the qiblah (the sacred direction of prayer), because Pharaoh had forbidden the public practice of their religion and sought to crush their worship. In this way, the believers could maintain their connection with Allah in secret, safeguarding their devotion from the enemy’s oppression.
The command to “establish prayer” emphasizes the centrality of prayer as the pillar of faith—a means of patience, strength, and unity for the believers. Even in the face of hardship, prayer was to be upheld completely and sincerely, for it is the lifeline that ties the servant to his Lord.
Finally, Allah commands Musa to give glad tidings to the believers: victory, divine support, and the ultimate reward in this life and the Hereafter. This was a promise of relief after hardship, of triumph after patience, and of honor after humiliation. The believers were assured that their steadfastness would not go unrewarded—Allah would grant them success over their enemies and establish them in the land.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse carries a timeless lesson for every believer: when the world closes its doors upon you, turn your own home into a fortress of faith. When you cannot practice your religion openly, do not abandon it—preserve it in the privacy of your household, and let your home be a beacon of prayer and remembrance. The glad tidings of Allah to the believers are not limited to that era; they extend to every believer who remains patient and steadfast. Allah’s promise of victory and reward is certain for those who hold fast to prayer and trust in Him. Let this verse inspire you to make your home a place where the light of faith shines, and to remember that after every difficulty comes ease, and after every trial comes triumph—if you remain firm in your devotion to Allah.
