Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • وَنَجِّنَا (wa najjina): Save us, deliver us, or rescue us from harm and hardship.
  • بِرَحْمَتِكَ (bi-rahmatika): By Your mercy — meaning through Your grace, kindness, and divine compassion, not through our own merit.
  • مِنَ الْقَوْمِ الْكَافِرِينَ (mina al-qawm al-kafirin): From the disbelieving people — specifically referring to Pharaoh and his chiefs who rejected faith and tyrannized the believers.

Explanation of the Verse:

This is the closing supplication of Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him) and his brother Harun (Aaron), along with the believing Israelites, when they found themselves trapped between the sea ahead and Pharaoh's approaching army behind them. In that moment of extreme fear and desperation, they turned to Allah with this profound and humble prayer.

The verse means: "And save us, by Your mercy, from the disbelieving people." They were not asking for mere physical safety alone — they were asking for complete deliverance from the oppression, torture, and persecution of Pharaoh and his forces, who had enslaved them, killed their sons, and subjected them to the most brutal forms of punishment and hard labor. The believers recognized that their rescue could only come through Allah's mercy, for no human power could save them from such a mighty tyrant.

This supplication reflects a deep spiritual truth: when all worldly means fail, the believer turns wholeheartedly to the Creator, acknowledging that His mercy encompasses everything. The mention of "Your mercy" is significant — it shows that they understood their salvation would come not because of their own strength or planning, but purely through Allah's grace and compassion.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear believer, look at how the prophets and righteous people turned to Allah in their darkest moments! They did not despair, nor did they rely solely on their own strategies. Instead, they combined their practical efforts with sincere supplication, placing their complete trust in Allah's mercy.

This verse teaches us a timeless lesson: no matter how overwhelming your trials may seem — whether they come from oppressive people, difficult circumstances, or inner struggles — Allah's mercy is greater than all of them combined. When you find yourself in hardship, let this be your prayer: "O Allah, save us by Your mercy from every difficulty and from those who oppose Your truth."

The believers of Musa's time were saved in a way that defied all human logic — the sea parted, and they walked through on dry land, while their oppressors were drowned. This is the power of Allah's mercy when a servant sincerely calls upon Him. So, strengthen your connection with Allah, make du'a (supplication) your constant companion, and trust that His mercy will always find a way to rescue you — just as it rescued the believers of old.

May we all be among those who call upon Allah with sincerity and are answered with His mercy and protection.

📜 Verse 84-88 — Yunus

And Moses said, "O my people, if you have believed in Allah, then rely upon Him, if you should be Muslims."
So they said, "Upon Allah do we rely. Our Lord, make us not [objects of] trial for the wrongdoing people
And save us by Your mercy from the disbelieving people."
And We inspired to Moses and his brother, "Settle your people in Egypt in houses and make your houses [facing the] qiblah and establish prayer and give good tidings to the believers."
And Moses said, "Our Lord, indeed You have given Pharaoh and his establishment splendor and wealth in the worldly life, our Lord, that they may lead [men] astray from Your way. Our Lord, obliterate their wealth and harden their hearts so that they will not believe until they see the painful punishment."
