Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Zeenah (زِينَةً): Adornment, luxury, and all that beautifies worldly life.
  • Mala' (مَلَأَهُ): His chiefs, nobles, and the influential leaders of his people.
  • Utmis (اطْمِسْ): Erase, destroy, or obliterate — remove all trace of benefit.
  • Ushdud (اشْدُدْ): Seal, harden, or make firm — closing the heart against faith.
  • Al-'Adhab al-Alim (الْعَذَابَ الْأَلِيمَ): The painful, severe punishment.

Tafsir (Explanation):

In this profound supplication, Prophet Musa (peace be upon him) turns to his Lord with a heart full of awareness and sincerity. He addresses Allah, saying: "Our Lord, You have given Pharaoh and his chiefs adornment and wealth in the life of this world." Musa acknowledges that these worldly gifts — the gold, the treasures, the palaces, and the luxuries — were all from Allah's granting, yet they were not used for gratitude or righteousness. Instead, Pharaoh and his elite used their wealth and status to mislead people from the path of Allah, to oppress the believers, and to spread corruption.

Musa then makes a powerful dua, saying: "Our Lord, blot out their wealth and harden their hearts, so that they will not believe until they see the painful punishment." This was not a prayer born of hatred or personal vengeance, but a plea for justice and a recognition that these tyrants had passed the point of no return. Their hearts had become so entrenched in arrogance and denial that there was no hope for their guidance. Musa, having witnessed their persistent rejection and cruelty, asked Allah to strip them of the very tools they used for oppression and to seal their hearts — not out of despair, but out of certainty that their fate was sealed.

The wisdom in this supplication is profound. It teaches us that wealth and beauty in this world are not always signs of Allah's pleasure; they can be a test and even a means of destruction. When blessings are used to spread evil and block people from the truth, those blessings become a curse. Musa's prayer was answered — Pharaoh's wealth was destroyed, and when he finally believed at the moment of drowning, it was too late, and Allah said: "Now you believe, when you had disobeyed before and were of the corrupters?"

This verse carries a beautiful lesson for every believer: never envy the worldly riches of those who oppose the truth. Their wealth may be their downfall, and their apparent success is but a temporary illusion. Trust in Allah's justice, and know that He sees all. When you see oppression, turn to Allah in supplication, for He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing, and His justice is perfect. And remember — the most valuable treasure is not gold or silver, but a heart firm in faith, content with Allah's decree, and steadfast upon His path.

And We took the Children of Israel across the sea, and Pharaoh and his soldiers pursued them in tyranny and enmity until, when drowning overtook him, he said, "I believe that there is no deity except that in whom the Children of Israel believe, and I am of the Muslims."
